Former O.P. Football Star Kugler Commits To Purdue

Posted on May 20, 2010 by Patrick Moran

Robert KuglerRobert Kugler was one of the true emerging high school football players in the area by the end of  last season.  The Orchard Park junior finished the sesaon with 64 tackles and two forced fumbles, earning him a spot on the First-Team, All Western New York football squad.  Colleges, major ones at that were lining up in pursuit.  2010 figured to be a fun year to watch him perform.

Football is certainly in his bloodline.  His father is Sean Kugler, the now-former Buffalo Bills offensive line coach.  Unfortunately Kuglar is no longer with the Bills and now holds the same position with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Even sadder for fans of Orchard Park, his family has made the move with him.

Kuglar has transferred to North Allegany High in Pennsylvania, along with his brother Patrick, who showed promise last year as a Freshmen.  While it’s unkown if their student body knows what’s coming their way, it’s now known where the older brother will be going to college in 2011.

The standout has committed to attend the University of Purdue when his high school days are over.  By choosing to be a Boilermaker, Kulgar bypassed several offers, including those from Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Colorado State, Florida Atlantic and Stanford.  Kuglar was also considering Boise State among other schools.

He’s the first player to commit to Purdue for the 2011 season.

Scout.com rates Kuglar as a three-star prospect and has him ranked 18th among tight ends in the nation, although he’s just as likely to play defensive end or linebacker at the collegiate level.

As for 2010, North Allegany’s gain is Orchard Park’s loss.  Kugler says he will miss the area.

“I’m going to miss my friends,” Robert told James Goller of OrchardParkSports.com. “I’ve really enjoyed my time as a student athlete here. I’ve made great friends on every team I played on and the experiences have been great. The state (football) championship (in 2008) was awesome.”

But it’s time to move on.  His dad went to a perceived better situation in Pittsburgh and Kugler wants it to be the same with him.

“Moving to a new place can be exciting,” he said. “Plus, my brother and I are going to have to prove ourselves all over again, which is only going to be fun.”
