Buffalo State’s Jenna Frieling and Kyrstin Lekki swept the weekly State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) awards, earning Pitcher and Player of the Week recognition respectively after helping the Bengals to a 6-4 start to the season.
Frieling, a senior exceptional and elementary education major, went 2-2 with a save in a week where she threw 25 2/3 innings with a 1.36 ERA and limited opponents to a miniscule .149 batting average. She also had 22 strikeouts and just six walks. Frieling capped the week with a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Loras (IA).
Lekki, a sophomore, was 12 of 30 (.400) with six extra-base hits, including four doubles, a triple and a homerun. She also had seven RBIs and six runs scored, starting every game at shortstop.
The SUNYAC also announced the results of its preseason coaches’ poll, picking the defending conference champion Bengals to finish third. Buffalo State will wrap up its spring trip in Clermont, Fla. later today, and will open SUNYAC play with a doubleheader at Geneseo on Friday.
