The Buffalo Bills have wrapped up training camp at St. John’s Fisher in Rochester following their last practice Tuesday morning.  Judging by the attendance and fan interaction throughout, most would label this camp uneventful and borderline monotonous.

However, in his first camp as Bills head coach, Chan Gailey didn’t take kindly to the sentiments of a couple fans taking a few too many verbal liberties.  A few spectators spent a large part of the final morning of public practice heckling a couple of the players, most notably quarterback Trent Edwards.

Following the workout, Gailey went up to the stands and let the select fans know exactly what he thought of them.  He also ensured the team would not sign autographs for their group.

“They (the fans) said some things during practice that were derogatory to a couple of our players,” Gailey said.  “If you say something derogatory to one of us, you’re saying it to all of us.”

Edwards was calm about Gailey’s mini-implosion, but was impressed his coach took up for him.

“Obviously I’m going to get some criticism,” Edwards said.  “Hopefully there’s more people praising me but that’s nice that you have a coach who will fight for you.”

If there’s one thing for Bills fans to like about Gailey much more than his predecessor Dick Jauron, it’s his willingness to speak frankly about topics when asked.  When a Buffalo News reporter asked Gailey how he thought training camp went, Gailey didn’t paint a rose-colored picture.

“I told them I thought we worked hard,” Gailey told the media. ”I’m not sure we worked smart every day, but we worked hard every day. We’ve got to learn to work both ways. We’ve got to mentally be sharp every day. I thought we got lax a little bit, but overall it was a good camp.”

While Gailey was fed up with a particular group of fans, he did go out of his way to praise the majority that did show their support for the hometown team.

“That’s what this game is about, for the fans,” he said. “We’re trying to play the game so that we get people excited and enthusiastic about pulling for their team. And their team is the Buffalo Bills so that’s what it’s about. That’s a big part of what we’re trying to get done, being successful for the fans.”

With the Bills breaking camp, the rest of their practices will be in Orchard Park and closed to the public.  Their next preseason game is Saturday against Terrell Owens and the Cincinnati Bengals at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
