Considering most people expected either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Brian Brohm to be the odd man out among Bills quarterbacks, it was at least semi-surprising to see Levi Brown get released by the team on Saturday as they got down to the 53-man roster limit. After initially being taken back by the move it appeared a certainty he’d spend a season on the team’s practice squad, assuming he wasn’t claimed by another team.
Well, some 24 hours Brown wasn’t picked up by another team. In what many will consider a shocking development, it doesn’t appear he’ll be back in Buffalo anytime soon unless it’s for a visit.
Brown tweeted Sunday night that he will not be joining the Bills practice squad. Not only does he appear surprised; he’s also angry.
“NEVER woulda guessed id be in this position right now…not even a practice squad invite. i’ve now officially gone from surprised to pissed!”
Brown was the team’s seventh round pick in this year’s draft. He was expected to be developed slowly and while he showed a live arm in the preseason, he also looked very raw. Brown completed 15-of-30 preseason passes for 130 yards and a pair of interceptions.
All along it appeared that the loser in the No. 2 battle between Fitzpatrick and Brohm would get cut, and Brown would either serve as the third quarterback or at worst; get assigned to the practice squad.
But head coach Chan Gailey seen enough in Brown he didn’t feel comfortable with to sever ties with the rookie. While Gailey did give him praise following last Thursday’s preseason finale at Detroit, he clearly became less enthused about his prospects after watching the game film.
