I like Chad Kelly. Overall he’s a quality kid and quite obviously a ridiculously talented football player. He’s taking his extraordinary talents to Clemson next year and genuinely I wish him nothing but the best. But this youngster needs to gain some maturity in a big way as he evolves and if I could offer him advice, I’d pungently suggest him discarding Twitter.
Maybe it’s the hype of carrying a famous last name or perhaps he’s just not aged enough to handle the intense scrutiny of the media spotlight, but if you follow Kelly on Twitter surely you see what I’ve been seeing—the kid has been acting the fool lately. Kelly may not be the next rocket scientist when he’s a grown adult but he’s certainly no dummy either. Unfortunately, his spelling of words, grammar and context on Twitter are making him an easy target to critics (and haters.)
Until now I’ve enjoyed hearing what he has to say and I’ll always root for him, but for the time being I think it’s time for him to ditch Twitter—and songs rapping about him.
♦ Ever since Buddy Nix stated the Buffalo Bills would target a wide receiver this offseason even if they retain Stevie Johnson, speculation has run rampant to who the Bills will covet when free agency begins. One name I hear associated with Buffalo almost daily is Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe. I could see all the reasons— he’s big, talented and has ties to Chan Gailey when the Bills coach was in Missouri. But before you preorder your Bowe jersey, I hear his departure for Buffalo is not likely to happen. From what I’ve been gathering, there’s a very strong chance Bowe will be franchise tagged by the Chiefs, similar to what I see the Bills doing with Johnson.
♦ Fortunately for Buffalo, at least if they are willing to spend some major money on the open market, this is a very deep and talented wide receiver free agent class. Vincent Jackson and Marques Colston would be perfect fits for the Bills and Pierre Garcon wouldn’t be far behind. DeSean Jackson has all the talent any team could ask for, but perceived character issues could be a concern to Buddy Nix. Reggie Wayne is a big name and still an outstanding player, but is beginning to move towards a possession-type receiver at this stage of his career and Buffalo definitely prefers someone who can stretch the field above all else. Mario Manningham and Robert Meacham could lead a tier of second wave receivers the Bills will take a look at. Let’s put it this way— it’s far too early to project who the Bills are going to target come March, but rest assured Buffalo will make a significant addition to the receiving corps aside from just making sure Johnson sticks around. Ralph Wilson personally wants another good receiver and the Bills will get one this spring.
♦ If you’re any kind of fan of high school hoops, I highly recommend getting over to Kenmore this evening and checking out Canisius face St. Joe’s at 7pm.The rivalry flat-out is as good as it gets in Western New York and feels like a big-time college atmosphere every time the heated rivals meet. As is usually the case, both teams are having good seasons and the contest could have plenty of postseason seeding ramifications.
♦ Former Buffalo Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny is having offseason surgery on his shoulder and will not be ready until training camp. Jacksonville paid an awful lot of money for Posluszny as compared to the Bills, who got much more for far less from Nick Barnett last season.
♦ What in the world is going on with former Niagara Falls high school legend Jonny Flynn? The sixth overall pick of the 2009 NBA draft was outstanding as a rookie in Minnesota but has suffered every setback imaginable over the past few years. A hip injury which led to surgery stunted Flynn’s progress with the Timberwolves last year and he was traded to Houston during the offseason. The move made many think Flynn would be well on his way towards a major comeback, but Flynn is once again a non-factor as a Rocket. He’s averaging just 3.6 points and 3.4 assists per game and has mostly been relegated to third-string point guard duty. He’ll be a free agent after the season and hopefully can get his career kick started somewhere else. Maybe playing in a city closer to home like Cleveland or Toronto could do the trick.
♦ I’m going to throw out a prediction in late January….. Peyton Manning will be the opening day starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in September and with Buffalo’s luck, will probably open the season at home against the Bills.
♦ The New York Mets do an awful job of marketing the Buffalo Bisons. I literally go months at a time forgetting Buffalo even has a Triple-A baseball organization. I put that squarely on the parent club. Where is the hype?
♦ Matt Barnaby was back on Twitter this week after a long absence and asking fans to come up with a replacement for his MattBarnabyESPN handle. I bit my lip, but suspect a lot of people didn’t do the same. For the record, he’s now MattBarnaby3636.
♦ We’ll be finishing up our series of the 2011 Buffalo Bills “Biggest Bright Spots” and “Darkest Clouds” within the next week before diving headfirst into several articles examining potential free agents and draft prospects.
♦ I have to share a crazy fact I learned from Matt Rich Warren of Buffalo Rumblings via his Twitter. Warren said that Bills cornerback Reggie Corner got cut last year, was re-signed and made more money last year than Stevie Johnson, Jairus Byrd, Scott Chandler, Erik Pears and Andy Levitre. That’s just crazy.
