Senior Anthony Nelson was named to the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Defensive All-America Team. Nelson was one of 21 players named to the team and the only member from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
The Mid-Major Defensive All-America Team honor is another accolade added to the list of accomplishments for the Plainfield, N.J. native. Nelson joins former backcourt teammate Tyrone Lewis as the only Purple Eagles to be named to the Mid-Major Defensive All-America squad.
Nelson was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, earned All-MAAC Second Team honors and was selected to the NABC All-District Second Team during his record-setting senior campaign.

Anthony Nelson capped off his record-setting senior season by earning the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year award, as voted on by the league’s coaches, to become the second Purple Eagle to win the award. Nelson’s 3.4 steals per game leads the nation.
Nelson, who earned All-MAAC Second Team honors on Monday, is having a record breaking season for the Purple Eagles. He became the first player in program history to have over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 600 assists and 200 steals in his career, while setting the school’s all-time career assists record with 646.
His 3.4 steals per game and 96 steals this season are school records, breaking former teammate Tyrone Lewis’ records of 2.6 steals per game and 91 total steals set during the 2008-09 season. Lewis became the first Purple Eagle to win the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year award during that season. Nelson’s 228 career steals are second behind Lewis’ 250.

Three Purple Eagles were selected to 2010-11 All-MAAC Teams announced on Monday. Men’s basketball guards, senior Anthony Nelson and freshman Marvin Jordan, were named to the All-MAAC Second Team and All-Rookie Team, respectively. Senior Liz Flooks represented the women’s team with a placement on the All-MAAC Third Team.
Nelson earned his first-ever all-conference team award after having one of the best seasons for a Niagara basketball player. Nelson averaged a career-high 15.0 points per game to lead NU in scoring and his 5.0 rpg were a career-best. Nelson rewrote section of the record book this season. He is the first player in school history to have over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 600 assists and 200 steals, recorded the program’s first-ever triple-double, became the all-time career leader in assists and set the single-season steals record. Nelson ranks in the top five in the conference points per game (fifth), assists per game (second), steals per game (first) and minutes per game (second ). Nelson has also gained nation recognition. He is one of 16 players to have recorded a triple-double this season and his 3.4 steals per game leads the nation.

Anthony Nelson set the school’s career assists record as Niagara was defeated by the Loyola Greyhounds, 75-63, on Friday night at the Gallagher Center to snap its nine-game win streak in the series.
“We did not deserve to win that game tonight,” head coach Joe Mihalich said. ”I’m not sure we had enough guys that really came to play tonight.”
Nelson surpassed Alvin Cruz’s total of 630 assists which was set six seasons ago in tonight’s game. Nelson recorded his 631st career assist at the 14:42 mark in the first half. Nelson, who leads the nation in steals, stole the ball from Julius Brooks and sent an outlet pass to Marvin Jordan who made a layup to cut the score to 7-4.

Senior Anthony Nelson reached the 1,000-point and 500-rebound milestones as Niagara dropped a 77-57 contest against the Saint Peter’s Peacocks on Saturday afternoon at the Yanitelli Center.
Nelson, who is from nearby Plainfield, N.J., became the 41st member of the 1,000-point club in front of family and friends. Nelson entered the game needing seven points for 1,000 in his career. Nelson drove around his defender for a layup to score his 1,000th point with 16:54 left in the second half to cut SPC (9-8, 4-2 MAAC) lead to 44-29.
Niagara (4-14, 1-5 MAAC) started the game in control behind 6-for-9 shooting from the field. A jumper by Malcolm Lemmons gave the Purple Eagles their largest lead at 19-12 with 8:46 left. Though, Niagara would go scoreless in the final four minutes of the half as the Peacocks surged ahead.

Senior Anthony Nelson’s fourth career double-double inspired Niagara to a 69-55 win over the Siena Saints on Sunday at the Gallagher Center.
“We are very pleased with the outcome today,” head coach Joe Mihalich said. ”The outcome was because of the way we competed and how hard we worked out there. It was a good feeling in that locker room and I am happy for these guys.”
Niagara (4-13, 1-4 MAAC) clamped down on Siena (5-10, 2-3 MAAC) in the second half en route to picking up its first conference win of the season, while halting its six-game skid. NU has won the last three meetings against Siena at home by an average score of 14 points . The Purple Eagles, who led 23-21 at halftime, held the Saints to their fewest points total in the series since Jan. 19, 1996 when Niagara won 52-50.

Paced by four double-digit scorers, the Niagara men’s basketball team (10-6, 3-1 MAAC) defeated MAAC foe Fairfield (10-4, 3-1 MAAC) by a score of 77-68 at the ‘Taps’ Gallagher Center on Monday night. Senior Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) led the Purple Eagles with 22 points while fellow senior Bilal Benn (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied his seventh double-double on the season, with 15 points and 13 boards.
“I don’t know you would call this a must-win, but it definitely was a must to get the feeling that we had last year back,” Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. “I think we did that tonight. This was a great win for us.”

The Niagara men’s basketball team (0-1) dropped its season opener at Auburn (1-0) on Friday night, 69-65. The Purple Eagles held a seven-point lead with 2:24 remaining, but couldn’t get the ball to bounce their way down the stretch.
“I am very proud of our guys,” Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. “We had an SEC team beat on their home floor, but a couple plays didn’t go our way down the stretch.”
Niagara outrebounded the bigger Tigers, but were outmatched on the charity stripe by a 30-10 advantage.
