BSD 2010 Review: Our Five Best Stories

  • Posted on January 3, 2011 at 11:30 am

2010 Buffalo Sports DailyWe’re journeying today on a series of the best… and worst of Buffalo Sports Daily circa 2010. Kicking things off today is what we deem our  five best stories of the past year.

I’d like to assume we’ve had more than five meaningful stories over the past year, but these are the one I both enjoyed writing the most and received (generally speaking) the most positive feedback from.

Before commencing on our pats on the back, it’s definitely worth noting we’re highly conscious of dropping the ball more than a couple of times (but not as many as Stevie Johnson).  We fully intend on taking pokes at ourselves multiple times over the coming days, as you’ll see.

BSD Exclusive: Adam Schefter Interview

  • Posted on January 13, 2010 at 11:43 am

A few nights ago I reported that Bill Cowher will not be coaching in Buffalo based on a public tweet by ESPN-NFL insider Adam Schefter, and a simple direct message from him that followed.

For that, I was ripped on message boards and comments everywhere and upon reflection, deservedly so.  Schefter is not a source but a reporter, and erroneously I originally masked his private comment to me as a source. Lesson learned.

People were/are understandably pessimistic about Schefter’s statement, mainly because he didn’t base it on a source.

Since then I’ve sought clarification.  After today I’ve found it.

Source: Cowher “nearly a lock” to coach in 2010

  • Posted on January 9, 2010 at 1:09 pm

A source I spoke with this morning told me that Bill Cowher is “nearly a lock” to coach in the NFL again in 2010.  But Bills fans shouldn’t get excited quite yet.  Just because the Buffalo is the only team with a help wanted sign hanging on their head coaching door, it doesn’t automatically equate to Cowher roaming the sidelines in Orchard Park next season.

“All my Cowher sources say no way”.  The same source said, but also admitted there’s so much conflicting information out there they could be wrong.

Although there ‘s no other openings other than Buffalo at this moment—or at least once Pete Carroll is officially named Seattle Seahawks coach, that could still change in the coming days.   Dallas hosts Philadelphia tonight in a wild-card round matchup and should the Cowboys lose there’s speculation Wade Phillips could get sent packing.

While on the surface it appears the Seattle opening has no direct effect on the Bills, in reality it possibly will.  With Carroll taking the job there’s now an vacancy at USC and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that USC athletic director Mike Garrett tried to hire Jeff Fisher in 2001.

Billboard Campaign Becomes Charity Campaign

  • Posted on January 8, 2010 at 9:30 am

If you reside in the Western New York area and/or follow the Buffalo Bills, unless you’ve lived under a rock the past day 24 hours you’re aware that Buffalo Sports Daily launched a Bill Cowher billboard campaign on behalf of Bills fans everywhere.

Thanks to a lot of hard work– and a ton of media coverage, that goal has been met.  In less than four days we were able to raise the money and as a result the billboard will be up near downtown Buffalo Monday morning.

It doesn’t stop there.  We’ve said from the beginning all proceeds after the funds were raised would go directly to the Hunter’s Hope Foundation.   As of this posting we’ve already amassed a little over $200 for the charity.  We’d like for the generosity of all our readers and Bills fans to keep it going.

Cowher in Buffalo rumors again pick up steam

  • Posted on January 5, 2010 at 10:24 am

I guess since ProFootballTalk.com picked this up, it’s time to mention it here.

Joe Logan, reporting at EastAurora.org, wrote early Monday morning that former Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher was expected in Buffalo today, Tuesday, to meet with the Bills about their vacant head coaching position.

As Mike Florio notes, the report merits at least a closer look, given that Logan also reported that Buffalo’s entire coaching staff would be fired – about five hours before we got the word from Jay Glazer, if that time stamp is to be believed.

Tuesday Coaching Carousel

  • Posted on January 5, 2010 at 9:43 am

Despite several reports that suggest otherwise, if the Buffalo Bills are really interested in interviewing Brian Billick to become their 17th head coach, they’re doing a fine job of being nonchalant about it.  I spoke to a member of the Bills organization who told me Billick hasn’t been contacted by the club if he does it would be “news to me.”

That certainly doesn’t preclude Billick from coming to Buffalo.  The club interviewed Perry Fewell Monday night and informed the entire coaching staff yesterday morning they wouldn’t be back next year unless the new coach wanted them, so Buddy Nix’s plate has been full.  I’m told no candidates were contacted Monday as Nix took care of in-house business.

Nix is expected to start diving into interviews with prospects as early as today, and maybe he does contact Billick.

Don’t expect Nix to wait on Cowher for long

  • Posted on January 4, 2010 at 9:39 am

You don’t have to be a football connoisseur to figure out what head coach would make the biggest impact in Buffalo.  Bill Cowher has made no secret to his circle of friends he’d like to coach again in 2010 and with a vacancy available in Orchard Park; the Buffalo Bills are always a possibility.

Recent reports, including those by ESPN and right here have said the organization has already met and Cowher came away impressed. The problem with Cowher or any big ticket coach is they’re unlikely to jump on a Buffalo offer.  Like it or not, Cowher or anyone else with multiple options is going to explore all of them before making a decision.

Buddy Nix may not be willing to wait for long.

Bills Catch Potential Cowher Break, Part 2

  • Posted on January 2, 2010 at 11:27 pm

It’s still just another step of many things that need to happen, but another alleged Bill Cowher 2010 destination may be closed off.

Last week it was reported that Carolina has offered John Fox and his entire staff the opportunity to return for the 2010 season.  Now it looks like Tampa Bay may be out of the Cowher mix as well.  Pro Football Talk, citing a source says that Bucs head coach Raheem Morris has been told both he and his staff will be back in 2010.

Carolina and Tampa were both teams where widespread speculation mounted towards Cowher resuming his coaching career.

Brandon still the key in Cowher Chase

  • Posted on December 31, 2009 at 10:00 pm

On Tuesday night Sal Capaccio came out in the open on his “Buffalo Bills Now!” UStream show that a source outside the Bills organization revealed to him Cowher is very impressed with the Buffalo Bills organization, and in no way would automatically rule out becoming the next head coach if the Bills were to come calling.

And according to Capaccio, the Bills have.  His source told him he “wouldn’t be surprised if they are talking today.”

Buffalo Sport Daily was the first to convey Capaccio’s comments, and by Wednesday morning the news was all over the nation, literally.  ESPN.com, WGR, Pro Football Talk, National Football Post and SI.com among others published stories, citing the report.

Report: Cowher “impressed and interested” in Bills

  • Posted on December 30, 2009 at 10:59 am

In a complete contradiction of recent reports, media personality Sal Capaccio of Buffalo Sports Daily and SalSports.com cites a reliable source that says free agent head coach Bill Cowher is very “impressed and interested” in the Buffalo Bills, and has in no way shut the door on potentially becoming their head coach in 2010.

Capaccio, who was broadcasting live his UStream “Buffalo Bills Now!” show Tuesday evening when an excessive amount of listeners forced the site to crash, spoke with me moments ago by telephone.

Bills catch indirect break in potential Cowher chase

  • Posted on December 28, 2009 at 1:44 pm

Bill Cowher has publicly said he plans on returning to coaching in 2010.  Conceivably the Buffalo Bills indirectly caught a break today.

The Charlotte Observer reports this afternoon that Carolina head coach John Fox, along with G.M Marty Hurney and Fox’s entire coaching staff will be offered the opportunity to return to the Panthers in 2010.

According to the report, Fox will not be offered a contract extension.  2010 is the final year of his contract and he’s due $6-million.

Despite Carolina’s disappointing 7-8 record, perhaps jobs were saved by their recent surge.  Carolina knocked off Minnesota last week and probably ended the New York Giants season yesterday after destroying them on the road, 41-9.

Let’s hope Bills are working on a Plan B

  • Posted on November 24, 2009 at 9:42 am

It was a week ago today, following a 41-17 road loss to one of football’s hottest teams in Tennessee, that the Buffalo Bills relieved head coach Dick Jauron of his duties and promoted defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to interim head coach. Since then, the Bills have lost a close road game in Jacksonville, suffered two more devastating, season-ending injuries, and crept a little closer toward the top of the 2010 NFL Draft order.

Most interestingly of all, they’ve also been linked to nearly every big-name head coach on the market.

Mike Shanahan, former head coach of Denver, will meet with the Bills at some point this week, before Thanksgiving on Thursday. The team went after Jon Gruden briefly before he re-upped his contract with ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.” Last night, NFL.com reported that the Bills have reached out to former Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher. Tangentially, names like Mike Holmgren, Tony Dungy and Marty Schottenheimer have been mentioned, too, though it seems apparent that none of those three men are particularly interested in coaching again.

Shannon Sharpe on what it takes to land Shanahan

  • Posted on November 22, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Unless Perry Fewell can miraculously turn around the franchise over the final seven weeks, the Buffalo Bills are going to be looking for a new head coach, at the very least come January 4, 2010.   With a fan base already incensed, odds are Ralph Wilson finally takes a swing for the fences with the hire.

Among big name free agents already linked to having the Bills interest, Mike Shanahan is a name the team is attracted to.

Shannon Sharpe, another CBS analyst who is still close to Mike Shanahan, who he played for, says the Bills will meet with his former coach this week, but Shanahan will make it clear to him what he’s looking for.
