Campbell Is Buffalo State Athlete of Week

Buffalo-State-College12Men’s track runner Jimmy Campbell was named the Buffalo State Athlete of the Week after his strong performance in the team’s third meet of the season on Friday night.

The sophomore forensic chemistry major took down Division I and II competitors to win the 400-meter dash at Youngstown State Invitational with a new facility record time of 48.60 seconds – which converts because of track size to the third fastest time in Division III so far this season.  He also placed fourth the 200-meter dash (22.36).

Buffalo State will return to action this Saturday at Mount Union.

Buff State Slips to 24th in National Poll Despite Two More Wins

Buffalo-State-College1Buffalo State is enjoying its best start to a season in 20 years with an 8-1 overall record, and is currently ranked 24th in the latest D3Hoops.com national poll.

Buffalo State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a pair of victories last weekend to claim the Coles Classic Championship.  After defeating Keuka 108-78 in the tourney’s first round, the Bengals worked overtime to down Capital, 81-78, in the title game.

Buffalo State boasts the fourth most potent offense in the nation, averaging 93.1 points-per-game.  The  Bengals also rank in the top-10 in the nation in steals-per-game (sixth – 13.9), blocked shots-per-game (ninth – 5.6), and turnover margin (10th – +7.2).

Buffalo State’s Pete Earns Football Honors

Buffalo State CollegeFreshman running back Rich Pete earned both Buffalo State Athlete of the Week and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Offensive Rookie of the Week honors after he helped lead the Bengals’ to a convincing 34-12 victory over The College of New Jersey on Saturday at Coyer Field.

The freshman business major got loose for the longest play from scrimmage in the NJAC this season, sprinting 83 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.  Pete averaged 11.1 yards-per-carry for the game with 14 rushes for 156 yards, his third 100-yard game of the season.  The Bengals rushed for a total of 365 yards in the game.

Pete leads the league’s top rushing offense and in third in the NJAC with 526 yards on 76 carries, averaging 6.9 yards-per-touch.  He also has four touchdowns this season.

Buffalo State will next visit Glassboro, N.J. this Saturday to take on Rowan University at 1:30 p.m.

Buffalo State Football Star Honored

buff state logoBuffalo State junior linebacker Pasquale Vacchio was recognized by D3Football.com on its National Team of the Week after leading the Bengals’ defense in a 42-27 homecoming win over William Paterson on Saturday.

The history major tallied 11 tackles, with four for loss, including a pair of sacks, and also provided the turning point in the game.  With his team trailing 17-14, Vacchio grabbed his second interception of the season and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown on the third play from scrimmage in the third quarter that gave the Bengals a lead they would not relinquish.

Buffalo State (2-3/2-2) will play another conference game this Saturday when it travels Union, N.J. to play Kean University.

Buffalo State Adds Crowe to Men’s Hockey Staff

Buffalo State CollegeBuffalo State has added Kenmore-native and former Division I player Jeremiah Crowe to its staff as an assistant men’s hockey coach.

Crowe played four seasons at Division I Clarkson University, appearing in 91 career games.  He received the 2010 Richmond Unsung Hero Award for unselfish play while significantly contributing to team success as a defenseman.  He also helped the Golden Knights capture the ECAC regular season title in 2008 and win an ECAC Championship in 2007, and advance to the NCAA playoffs in each season.

Crowe’s junior hockey career included stints locally with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, as well as with the Markham Waxers, Springfield Spirit and Texarkana Bandits.

Buffalo State Running Back Named Offensive Rookie of the Week

buff state logoBuffalo State freshman running back Rich Pete was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Offensive Football Rookie of the Week after his breakout game as part of the Bengals’ record-setting win over Western Connecticut State on Saturday.

Pete is the second-consecutive Bengal to earn NJAC Offensive Rookie honors after helping Buffalo State secure an 82-17 win over Western Connecticut in its home opener.  The 150-pound running back carried the ball 12 times for 108 rushing yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run which marked the first score of his collegiate career. He also caught two passes for 18 yards.

Buffalo State set school records with 82 points and 702 yards of total offense that included 438 rushing yards.  The Bengals’ 11 touchdowns was also a new school best.

Buffalo State will visit No. 10 Montclair State for another conference game next Saturday at 1 p.m.

Buffalo State Women’s Volleyball Cruises Past D’Youville

buff state logoBuffalo State (3-7) snapped its four-match losing skid, topping host D’Youville (2-6) in straight sets, winning 25-18, 25-13 and 25-22 in a non-conference match Tuesday evening.

Ray-Ray Algbedo pounded out a team-high eight kills to lead Buffalo State.  Kelsey Bashore dished out 20 assists and had three aces, while Chelsea Moore had nine digs and eight aces.  Allyson Pierce chipped in seven kills and three aces, and Paige Ottaviano had five kills and eight digs.

Buffalo State will open its home schedule on Thursday when it welcomes Hilbert to the Sports Arena for a 7 p.m. match.

Buffalo State’s Petriello Signs with ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads

Buffalo StateThe Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL have signed former Buffalo State Bengal icer Nicholas Petriello to an entry-level contract.

Petriello is the all-time leading scorer in Buffalo State history with 133 points in 100 games. His 52 goals over four seasons are third-most in program history and his 81 assists are second-most. The 25-year-old was the conference’s rookie of the year in 2008 and received second-team All-SUNYAC accolades in both 2009 and 2011.

The Idaho Steelheads are an affiliate of the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Buffalo State officially opens its 2011-12 men’s hockey season at Geneseo on Oct. 28.

Buffalo State Sending 10 Sprinters to NCAA Outdoor Championships

Buffalo State TrackThe NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee announced the participants in the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships and 10 different Bengals will be competing 13 times at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio, this weekend.

Xavier Mateen enters the meet representing perhaps Buffalo State’s best shot at a national title.  After winning the indoor 55-meter dash, he enters this week’s meet ranked fourth in the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 10.55 seconds.  He will also run the 200-meter dash (18th – 21.81), and anchor the men’s 4×100-meter relay with Rawl Carew, Jalen Law (Buffalo/O’Hara) and Rashawn Simpson.  Buffalo State has the seventh-best time this year at 41.44 seconds.

Buffalo State Honors Top Scholar Athletes

buff state logoBuffalo State honored 84 student-athletes at its 14th Annual Scholar-Athlete Academic Luncheon to recognize student-athletes that have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher for at least three semesters at the college today in the Hall of Fame Lobby in the Sports Arena.

Following opening remarks by Athletics Director Jerry Boyes, President Aaron Podolefsky addressed the audience. The 84 student-athletes honored represented 44-percent of the total number of student-athletes eligible for the recognition, having been at Buffalo State for at least three semesters.  Among the honorees were 25 that have maintained a 3.50 GPA or higher.

Nick Weigand (Lancaster/Lancaster) and Kathryn Boughton (Lancaster/Lancaster) were also recognized as the top graduating male and female scholar-athletes respectively. Weigand is a member of the men’s swimming team, completing his degree in social studies education with a 3.78 GPA. Boughton is a member of the women’s soccer program, graduating with a degree in applied mathematics with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Buffalo State’s Simmons Named First Team All-Region

buff state logoBuffalo State sophomore guard Jake Simmons was named All-East Region first team by D3hoops.com after helping the Bengals to a 23-7 season and an appearance in the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament.

Simmons led the Bengals and the SUNYAC in scoring, averaging 19.5 points-per-game and became just the 19th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points, tallying 1,007 in just two seasons.  The philosophy major also set a school record hitting 92 3-pointers, and his 159 in two season also broke the school’s career mark.  Simmons was a contributor on defense as well, leading the league in steals with 77 and ranked 25th in the nation in that category.

Simmons, who also garnered first team All-SUNYAC honors, will now advance to the All-America ballot.  Those honorees will be announced this Saturday during the D3hoops.com championship game broadcast.

Buffalo State Football Promotes Reading in February

Buffalo StateBuffalo State’s football team is promoting reading in local elementary schools as a community outreach project throughout the month of February.

Several Bengal players and members of the coaching staff kicked off the program recently with a visit to Pine Hill Primary Center in Cheektowaga.  The Bengals conducted a brief assembly to stress the importance of reading and then went into the classrooms and read with the children.

“It is such an important project when you look at today’s literacy rates,” said Buffalo State assistant coach Matt Hanhold.  “It is a great experience for our players to interact with the kids.  We are fortunate to be in a position to potentially have a positive impact on these young learners.”

Buffalo State will continue the outreach program throughout the month.

Plattsburgh Clips Buffalo State Women’s Hockey, 2-1

buff state logoLeah Knott scored her first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to propel Buffalo State (7-9/3-7) past No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh (12-2-1/8-1), as the Cardinals scored two unanswered to defeat the Bengals, 2-1, in an ECAC West game today at the Ice Arena.

Christine Williams and Kailyn Murray each recorded an assist on Buffalo State’s lone goal.

Megan DiJulio led Plattsburgh with a goal and an assist.  Erika Shaubel scored once and Steph Moon chipped in two assists for the Cardinals.  Both teams scored in the opening period, with Buffalo State striking first at the 10:59 mark.  Plattsburgh answered less than six minutes later, with its first of two power play goals, and added the game-winner in the third period.

Buffalo State’s Smith, Doherty Earn All-East Football Honors

buff state logoBuffalo State’s Rob Smith and Mike Doherty were honored on the D3football.com 2010 All-East Region third team.

Smith, a senior wide receiver, totaled 882 yards on 47 catches, and also matched a school record with 10 touchdown receptions.  The sports management major also set a school record for catches in a game with 13 against Cortland.

Doherty, a freshman kick returner, averaged 26.4 yards-per-return on 24 attempts, and had a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns.  He was the first Bengal to return a kick the distance since 1999.

Buffalo State doubled its win total from the previous season for the second-consecutive year, finishing with a 4-6 record. The Bengals were 4-5 in NJAC play and ended the year on a three-game winning streak, including a season ending 56-45 win over Brockport in the I-90 Bowl.

Buffalo State Men’s Basketball Falls at Nazareth, 86-79

buff state logoNazareth (6-1) owned the glass, outrebounding visiting Buffalo State (4-2), 49-34, in an 86-79 victory in a non-conference game tonight at Kidera Gymnasium.

Jake Simmons led Buffalo State with 26 points and five steals.  Justin Mitchell added 16 points and six boards, and T.O. Jackson added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Nazareth never trailed in the first half, but the Bengals closed the opening 20 minutes knotted at 38-38.  Buffalo State took a two-point lead early in the second half for its only lead of the game, but the Golden Flyers used a 16-3 run to pull away.  The Bengals battled back, cutting the deficit to 79-77 with just under three minutes remaining, but Nazareth held Buffalo State off the rest of the way.

Buffalo State will travel to the Worcester (Mass.) Tournament this weekend and will open against Elms on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Buffalo State’s Simmons Named SUNYAC Basketball Player of the Week

buff state logoBuffalo State’s Jake Simmons was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Bengals to a 94-87 win at Pitt-Bradford.

The sophomore philosophy major was 10 of 12 from the field with 27 points as the Bengals remained unbeaten on the season at 3-0. Buffalo State trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half before battling back with the help of Simmons’ third 3-pointer of the game with 2:24 remaining in the opening stanza to give Buffalo State the lead for good.

Simmons leads the SUNYAC through three games, averaging 26.7 points-per-contest, and also has hit a league-best 18 3-pointers.  He is also second in the conference, averaging 3.0 steals-per-game.

Buffalo State will open SUNYAC play on Friday at home against Cortland at 8 p.m.

Buff State Remains Unbeaten In Hoops

buff state logoJake Simmons was 10 of 12 from the field and led five Bengal starters in double figures with 27 points as Buffalo State (3-0) defeated host Pitt-Bradford (1-3), 94-87, in a non-conference game tonight at KOA Arena.

Glenroy Carr and Chris Cartwright added 19 points.  Justin Mitchell chipped in 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Norman Simmons had 10 points and four steals.

Pitt-Bradford jumped out to a 16-6 lead, but Buffalo State rallied and took a 38-34 lead into the intermission.  The Bengals never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 11 before hanging on for the win.

Buffalo State will next open SUNYAC play on Friday, Dec. 3 at home against Cortland at 8 p.m.

Buffalo State Wins Women’s Basketball Betty Abgott Invitational Title

buff state logoStaci McElroy tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds to propel host Buffalo State (3-0) to a championship with a 65-55 victory over Grove City (1-2) in the Betty Abgott Invitational Saturday at the Sports Arena. Sage (1-2) dominated Hilbert (0-2), 77-31, in the consolation game.

Barb Kiliszek added 13 points and five steals for the Bengals in the title game.  Kristin Ritch scored 15 points, hitting 5 of 7 from beyond the arc, and Dee Layne had 13 rebounds and four points.

Christine Slater led Grove City’s offense with 20 points.  Megan Gebrosky added 15 points, and Leah Gibson had 13 points and five boards for the Wolverines.

Three Buffalo State Football Players Earn National Recognition

buff state logoThree Buffalo State football players were recognized by D3Football.com for their efforts in Saturday’s 45-21 victory over Morrisville State.  Wide receiver Rob Smith (Rochester/McQuaid) and kicker Nick Debbins (Lancaster/Lancaster) were named to the national team of the week in their respective positions, and Mike Doherty’s (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) 92-yard touchdown reception was the play of the week.

Smith, a senior sports management major, had four receptions of 45-plus yards in a 45-21 win over Morrisville State, en route to seven catches for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

Debbins, a junior social studies education major, was 3-for-3 on field goals and perfect on extra points in a 45-21 win against Morrisville State. He connected from 27, 29 and 35 yards, tying a school record for field goals in a game.

Doherty, a freshman, made an acrobatic one-handed catch that he turned into a 92-yard touchdown reception that was a finalist for national play of the week.

Kaczmierczak Named Buffalo State Athlete of the Week

buff state logoWomen’s volleyball setter Stephanie Kazmierczak (Buffalo/City Honors) was named the Buffalo State Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after helping the Bengals clinch a berth in the SUNYAC playoffs for the first time since 2002 with conference wins over Oswego and Geneseo this past weekend.

The senior business major dished out a team-high 141 assists in five matches last week, and added 17 kills, 51 digs and 16 blocks in 20 sets played.  Kazmierczak ranks fourth in the SUNYAC in assists-per-set.

Kazmierczak and the Bengals will play non-conference matches at Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday and Keuka on Saturday of this week, in preparation for their SUNYAC quarterfinal meeting with New Paltz on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. in Fredonia.

Buffalo State Falls to Rowan in Football, 24-7

Kam JohnsonSteve Hevalow and Tim Hagerty each surpassed the century mark on the ground as visiting Rowan (3-1/2-1) pounded out a 24-7 victory over Buffalo State (0-4/0-3) in an NJAC contest Saturday at Coyer Field.

Hevalow carried the load for the Profs with 30 rushes for 143 yards and two scores. Quarterback Hagerty ran 16 times for 127 yards, and was also 12 of 19 passing for 175 yards. Dean Hammel led the defense with nine tackles, including a sack. Matt Hoffman added seven tackles, including 3.5 for loss and two sacks.

Kean Pulls Out Wild Win at Buffalo State Football, 33-29

buff state logoBuffalo State (0-3/0-2) overcame a 23-0 halftime deficit, but Justin McLendon ripped off a late 85-yard kick return to reclaim the lead for Kean (2-1/2-1), and the Cougars held on for a 33-29 victory to spoil the Bengals’ Homecoming today at Coyer Field.

Buffalo State climbed all the way back and took its first lead of the game at 29-26 with 5:53 remaining, but McLendon took the ensuing kickoff the distance thwart the Bengals’ comeback bid.

Smith Named Buffalo State Athlete of the Week

buff state logoWide receiver Jarrett Smith was named the Buffalo State Athlete of the Week.

The senior economics and finance major had four catches for 152 yards, including touchdown strikes of 60 and 69 yards in the Bengals’ season-opening loss against St. John Fisher.

Smith and the Bengals will travel to Cortland this Saturday for an NJAC contest at 1 p.m.

Frieling, Lekki Sweep SUNYAC Weekly Softball Honors

Buffalo State CollegeBuffalo State’s Jenna Frieling and Kyrstin Lekki swept the weekly State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) awards, earning Pitcher and Player of the Week recognition respectively after helping the Bengals to a 6-4 start to the season.

Frieling, a senior exceptional and elementary education major, went 2-2 with a save in a week where she threw 25 2/3 innings with a 1.36 ERA and limited opponents to a miniscule .149 batting average. She also had 22 strikeouts and just six walks. Frieling capped the week with a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Loras (IA).

Buffalo State Randy Smith Tribute Set For Feb 19

The greatest athlete in the history of Buffalo State will be honored during the “Tribute to Randy Smith” at halftime of the Bengals’ men’s basketball game against Cortland on Friday, Feb. 19 at the Sports Arena.

Smith was a three-sport All-American in basketball, soccer and track from 1967-71. He died from a heart attack last June while working out. The tribute will include remarks from his former coaches and teammates as well as a proclamation by Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown naming Feb. 19 as Randy Smith Day in Buffalo.  Smith’s mother, wife and daughter will be on hand for the ceremony that will include a banner in his honor being lifted to the rafters.
