Canisius, Hutch Tech Cruise In Classic

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 11:06 pm

aaron whiteThe last time Canisius High School took to the hardwood, it was for the Manhattan Cup against St. Joe’s, where they trailed big at the half before storming back to win the Monsignor Martin Association championship.

There’d be no need for such dramatics in their season opener at the Pastor-Cooper Memorial High School showcase. Pitted against a gritty but overmatched OTC Middle, the Crusaders dominated literally from the opening tip, outscoring the Kats 23-1 in the first quarter (that’s seriously not a misprint) and eased their way to a 61-38 victory at Daemen College Thursday evening.

The Kats didn’t connect on their first field goal until the first minute of the second quarter when Brian Brown converted a layup.

Week Three High School Football Wrap-Up

  • Posted on September 19, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Chad-KellyWeek three of the Western New York high school football season is officially in the books, and there’s plenty of interesting storylines to come from it.

The big story of course was St. Joes, who defeated Monsignor Martin Association rival Canisius at home Saturday, 34-20 in front of nearly 3,500 fans.  The hero was sophomore Nigel Davis, who returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and had 60 rushing yards (with another touchdown) to go with an interception.  Clemson-bound quarterback Chad Kelly threw for 198 yards on 8-of-14 passing and ran for another 91 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown as the Maruaders won for the second straight week while handing Canisius their first loss of the season.

In the 79th meeting between the storied rivals, St. Joes never trailed as they look to repeat as Catholic league champions.  Mercer Timmis led Canisius with 267rushing yards on 36 carries and all three Crusaders’ touchdowns.

High School SportsThe matchups for the 2010 Monsignor Martin vs. ECIC high school basketball challenge have been made official.  Once again, St. Mary’s of Lancaster high school will host the action as it will showcase members of the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association in basketball competition against members of the ECIC.

For the first time, the event is sponsored by Adpro Sports, with the enjoyment of the student-athletes as the main objective, along with a strong focus on a healthy spirit of cooperation and competition between the private Catholic institutions of the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association and the public schools of Section VI and the ECIC, per the challenge’s press release.

Among last year’s thrillers, then No. 2 Nichols defeated top-ranked at the time Niagara Falls high school.

This year’s matchups are as follows:

Bar Spotlight: AJ’s LOUNGE- 1028 Walden Avenue, Cheektowaga

  • Posted on May 28, 2010 at 8:44 pm

AJs Lounge Walden AveNestled on Walden Avenue along the Cheektowaga/Buffalo border, AJ’s Lounge is one of Western New York’s true hidden gems.  AJ’s is also a rarity in that it’s the only known drinking establishment in the area that offers both a complimentary jukebox and pool table for its patrons to enjoy.

That’s right…  Only at AJ’s Lounge can you come in for a drink or bite to eat, load up the jukebox with your favorite Billy Joel, Elvis Presley and Journey songs before heading to the back and enjoying a game of billiards— for free!

If you’re hungry, AJ’s is a great place to enjoy a bite to eat.  The kitchen stays open until late in the night and features all the goodies you’ll see at most places of its kind; including chicken wings, chicken fingers, pizza sticks, mozzarella sticks as well as hamburgers or hot dogs from the grill.

If you’re part of a sports team and searching for a bar to call your home base, AJ’s Lounge owner Dick Thompson sponsors a variety of sports teams.  Softball, volleyball, darts, pool and even puck bowling teams are often found representing the bar in the WNY sports and recreation world.

Among those teams, the “Horsemen” are one of the areas best-known softball teams.  A four-time Cheektowaga men’s softball league champion, the squad has been a mainstay at AJ’s throughout the past decade.

Thompson stresses that participation and fun is the measure of a successful team, not just the wins and losses.

“We have sponsored teams of all skill levels,” Thompson said.  “Winning is always fun, but so is participating and being part of a team.  We’ve had teams that have won their leagues and others that have finished dead last.  It doesn’t matter. What matters is getting out, having fun and getting to spend time with your teammates and friends in a fun environment.  We also have drink and food specials for all of our teams.”

Beyond the playing field, if you enjoy games of chance, the bar has Quick Draw available with a pair of high definition televisions to watch the results on.  There’s also a wide assortment of instant lottery scratch off tickets available in its own machine for your gaming convenience.

Finally, there’s always happy hour and nightly drink specials to take advantage of.

All in all, AJ’s Lounge is one of the best bars in Western New York that you’ve probably never heard about.  An experienced and courteous bar staff caters to a variety of different crowds, ranging from the happy hour locals that enjoy watching “Jeopardy” on weeknights, to the party crowd looking to live it up until the wee hours of the morning.

AJ’s Lounge is located at 1028 Walden Avenue on the Cheektowaga/Buffalo border, near Pine Ridge. The phone number is 891-5934.  The bar is open at 8am daily, except on Sundays and remains open up until 4am nightly.

For Section VI boys high school basketball, Saturday’s finals are starting to fall into place.  Tuesday night saw a pair of A-2 semifinals contested at Buffalo State College and by the time the night was over East and Maryvale advanced to Saturday’s class final.

East star forward Domonique Jackson scored a game-high 23 points as East was in control throughout and eliminated city rival Lafayette, 68-48.  Jackson is a much-needed piece to the East squad, who suffered badly while he served a two-week academic suspension.  It was just his second game back.

H.S. Hoops: Niagara Catholic pounds Cheektowaga

  • Posted on December 16, 2009 at 6:50 pm

NC2Niagara Catholic came into their Monsignor Martin Association vs ECIC Challenge game against Cheektowaga undefeated (4-0).  They made sure they come out of the locker room at the start of each half ready to pounce.  They did just that, outscoring the Warriors 14-8 in the first and 20-6 in the third en route to easily defeating Cheektowaga (1-4), 59-42.

The game was barely five minutes old before the Patriots raced out to a 10-0 lead.  Frustrated with his starters play, Cheektowaga head coach Patrick Cullinan removed the entire unit and looked for more energy from his second team.  The move panned out as Cheektowaga got back into the game, trailing just 28-26 at halftime.
