Perhaps the Canisius seniors feel their career’s slowly coming to an end. Or maybe, they’re just finally learning to play without Frank Turner.
Whatever it is, the Golden Griffins (12-11, 6-7 MAAC) are winners of four of their last five and playing their best basketball of the season. Even with one of the distinguished five seniors — all of which are working on their masters’ degrees — Rob Goldsberry out due to concussion-like syndrome he received during the Niagara game two weekends ago, the Griffs put on a marvelous defensive display against Marist and St. Peter’s last weekend.
They crunched Marist 75-60 Friday, which included the Griffs forcing 15 turnovers. Then, they beat the second-place Peacocks 59-45 with a defensive effort that saw Canisius hold St. Peter’s to a ridiculous 22.4 shooting percentage from the floor.

Former Canisius College basketball player Frank Turner (Atlantic City, N.J.) has signed a professional contract to join Eiffel Towers Den Bosch, a professional team that plays in Holland in the Holland-Eredivisie. Turner signed a one-year deal with the team that finished third in the league’s standings last season.
“From an individual standpoint, Frank has accomplished many things in a relatively short amount of time,” Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. “He has earned two college degrees, he has his name splashed throughout the program’s record book and he has become the example for every student-athlete that comes to Canisius College from here on out. It is very simple – get a great education, play your heart out on the basketball court and be a solid individual off the court. Frank accomplished all three of these things and then some. I’m extremely proud that Frank has realized his dream of playing professional basketball and I feel he will do very well at the next level. I am very anxious to follow his pro career.”

Fans of Frank Turner were disappointed to not see him on the floor Friday night when the Buffalo Stampede played Quebec at the Koessler Athletic Center, the site of many great games by Turner as the point guard at Canisius College.
I spoke with Stampede representative Richard Anselmo. He told me that Turner missed the game because he had his Canisius senior banquet.
Turner has played in three games with the Stampede since joining the team on March 12. He’s averaged 19 points and seven assists in those games, all Buffalo losses.

In an effort to sell more tickets for their next home game Thursday at Canisius College, the Buffalo Stampede are rolling out an irresistible price tag on tickets.
Stampede owner Vincent Lesh reports that thanks to sponsor Joe Galvin from Home Restoration Painting, tickets for Thursday’s 7:30pm game against defending league champion Rochester will cost just two dollars for general admission seating instead of the regular seven.

Canisius senior Frank Turner scored a team-high 23 points, highlighted by his runner in the lane with 1.2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but it was not enough to help the Golden Griffins get over the top as the Blue and Gold fell to Saint Peter’s 73-72 in overtime in the Yanitelli Center on Sunday. The loss is Canisius’ third straight and drops the team to 11-14 overall and 6-8 in the MAAC, while the Peacocks improved to 14-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
Canisius was down 58-49 with 3:01 left on the clock after Saint Peter’s guard Wesley Jenkins went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. From there, Canisius would outscore Saint Peter’s by a 13-4 count that sent the game into an extra session. Julius Coles drilled a 3-pointer from the corner with 13 seconds left to cut the Peacocks’ lead to 62-60, and after Saint Peter’s missed a pair of free throws with nine ticks left in regulation time, Turner took the ball the length of the court and laid one over the front iron to knot the score at 62-62, sending the game into overtime.

The win is Canisius’ second straight and improved the team to 6-6 on the year, while the Privateers dropped their sixth straight to fall to 5-8.
The 48 points allowed by Canisius are the fewest in a game since Feb. 8, 1997, when the Blue and Gold defeated Fairfield 91-45 in Buffalo. New Orleans shot just 30.4 percent from the field and turned the ball over 19 times, while the Griffs closed out their southern swing by shooting a season-high 51.1 percent from the floor and out rebounding New Orleans by a 34-26 count.
