I like Chad Kelly. Overall he’s a quality kid and quite obviously a ridiculously talented football player. He’s taking his extraordinary talents to Clemson next year and genuinely I wish him nothing but the best. But this youngster needs to gain some maturity in a big way as he evolves and if I could offer him advice, I’d pungently suggest him discarding Twitter.
Maybe it’s the hype of carrying a famous last name or perhaps he’s just not aged enough to handle the intense scrutiny of the media spotlight, but if you follow Kelly on Twitter surely you see what I’ve been seeing—the kid has been acting the fool lately. Kelly may not be the next rocket scientist when he’s a grown adult but he’s certainly no dummy either. Unfortunately, his spelling of words, grammar and context on Twitter are making him an easy target to critics (and haters.)
Until now I’ve enjoyed hearing what he has to say and I’ll always root for him, but for the time being I think it’s time for him to ditch Twitter—and songs rapping about him.
Niagara Falls native Jonny Flynn was traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Houston Rockets last week. The sixth pick of the 2009 NBA draft, Flynn got off to a promising start as a rookie before a hip injury and inconsistent play set him back last season.
Flynn met with reporters in Houston this weekend to discuss the trade and his future. Flynn said that he “has a chip on his shoulder the size of a golden nugget.”
Niagara Falls native Jonny Flynn has a new home. The Minnesota Timberwolves traded Flynn along with DonatasMotiejunas to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Brad Miller, rights to the 23rd pick of the NBA draft (Nikola Mirotic) and a future first rounder.
Sources tell me Flynn knew several days ago that he was going to be traded on draft night. There were three teams interested in acquiring him according to the source: Phoenix, Houston and Toronto.
Flynn, the two-time Western New York Player of the Year at Niagara Falls in 2006-07, was the sixth overall pick of the 2009 draft by Minnesota and averaged 13.5 points and 4.4 assists as a rookie.
Flynn had hip surgery last July following his rookie campaign and it majorly affected his play over this past season. Flynn was out of the lineup rehabbing over the first 29 games and upon his return, the role he held was clearly diminished. Playing an average of more than 10 minutes less than his rookie season, Flynn averaged just 5.3 points and 3.4 assists per game while shooting just 36.5% from the field.
Roughly a year ago, former Niagara Falls high school standout Jonny Flynn appeared well on his way toward NBA stardom. The Minnesota Timberwolves starting point guard averaged 13.5 points and 4.4 assists per game his first season in the league and bigger things seemed imminent with another year of experience. It was even plausable that it’d be just a matter of time before he joined Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo in the conversation among the league’s elite point guards.
A flip of the calendar later and Flynn is almost certain to be suiting up for a new team before he begins his third season next fall.
Sources have told Yahoo Sports that star prospect Ricky Rubio has committed to leaving Spain and joining the Timberwolves for the 2011-12 season. Combine Rubio’s arrival with Flynn’s decline this past season, in part due to injury and also head coach Kurt Rambis’ decline in confidence, and it’s a near certainty Flynn will be traded sometime this summer.
Jonny Flynn has yet to play significant basketball for the Minnesota Timberwolves this season. He’s hoping that will change soon.
“I feel great, I keep getting better and I can’t wait to get out there and run up and down the floor.” Flynn told Minnesota reporters on Wednesday.
The former Niagara Falls high school and Syracuse University star has been out of action since having hip surgery in July. He’s hoping to be back in game action by mid-to-late November. He had his first full contact practice this past Monday and admitted to experiencing a little tightness in the hip.
According to a report by Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports, Western New York native Johnny Flynn will miss at 3-4 months of action because he needs surgery to repair an injured hip.
The Minnesota Timberwolves point guard started all but one game last year for the Wolves, averaging 13.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game as a rookie.
Attempts to reach Flynn directly for comment to this point have been unsuccessful.
The former Niagara Falls high school legend has been bothered by the hip for a long period of time. He was slatted to play for the Wolves in the NBA Summer League, but the hip forced him to bow out.
After just one season in the NBA, Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn has already become the subject of trade rumors.
IndyStar.com Indiana Pacers beat writer Mike Wells twittered Monday afternoon that the Pacers offered the 10th pick in the upcoming NBA draft to Minnesota for Flynn, and the T-Wolves said no thanks.
Flynn, the former Niagara Falls high school superstar and Syracuse University standout, recently wrapped up a NBA rookie season that saw him average 13.5 points and 4.4 assists per game. He was the sixth overall pick by Minnesota in the 2009 draft.
With loss after loss for former Niagara Falls high school superstar Jonny Flynn piling up, the Minnesota Timberwolves rookie is eagerly anticipating the end of an embarrassing rookie season. Just a year ago Flynn was playing for Syracuse and making a name for himself in the midst of a history-making, six-overtime Big East Championship.
March 2010 has led Flynn and the Wolves in the total opposite direction with a league-worst 13 game losing streak and a last place standing in the entire Western Conference.
We ran a poll recently on Buffalo Sports Daily asking fans if they would be happy if the Buffalo Bills traded for Michael Vick. After 356 cans casted their ballot the results were a little closer than anticipated. By a small margin the answer was no.
56% of fans voted no as compared to 44% yes. Ultimately I don’t think it will matter. I do feel Vick will get traded when deals can commence on March 5, but I don’t think it will be to Buffalo.
Although former great Jim Kelly is hardly a decision maker at One Bills Drive, you have to figure he’s at least “friendly” with Ralph Wilson, and with his very public statements saying he doesn’t Vick here I find it hard to believe the team would make a move for him.
There are many catch phrases that can describe the Minnesota Timberwolves. “Back-to-back winners” is not typically one of them. But that wasn’t the case over the weekend as Western New York native Jonny Flynn and his Wolves pulled off a pair of victories.
On Friday the Wolves took on the Los Angeles Clippers at the Target Center in Minnesota. Flynn who has streaky throughout his rookie season, came through strong with 19 points, 8 assists as his team went on to the 111-97 win. In a rare show of dominance, Minnesota at one time led by as much as 23 points, the largest they’ve seen all season.
A struggling Johnny Flynn and his Minnesota Timberwolves took their home floor Monday against the Philadelphia 76ers. Determined to not continue the losing path his team has been on all season long, the Niagara Falls native had the best game of his brief career.
Flynn pumped in a career-high 29 points, double his season average in 43 minutes as the Wolves upended Philadelphia, 108-103.
Flynn also tied a career-best with 9 assists and added 4 rebounds to solidify his best all around game as a young pro.
Western New York native Jonny Flynn continues his rookie season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and just like the team he represents, both continue to struggle. The Wolves are just 1-7 on the new year, including dropping a triple-overtime thriller at Houston Wednesday night.
Flynn has had his moments but clearly still has a lot to learn at the NBA level. The Niagara Falls high school product has been held to double digit points two straight games and three of the past five. In total Flynn’s reached at least 20 points just once in eight games in January.
His poor shooting teammates haven’t helped his assist total as failing to knock down open looks have contributed to him not having a game this season with at least 10 assists.
Jonny Flynn and the Minnesota Timberwolves have had a non-stop schedule since September. By quick tally, in just a few months of NBA play Flynn has played almost as many games as he did all season last year with Syracuse. So, it should come as no surprise everyone on the roster, especially Flynn was ready for a break.
Currently on a three-day break Flynn and the Timberwolves are regrouping and figuring out how to play more consistent basketball than they did over the holidays. Things started out well with wins against the New Jersey Nets on December 23rd and the Washington Wizards on the 26th. Against the Nets, Flynn saw over 35 minutes of action, scoring 22 points and committing 3 turnovers. Against the Wizards, Flynn saw considerably less time (only 24 minutes) and managed to score just eight points, though he didn’t have a single turnover. He added six assists for the night, making Kurt Rambis and his triangle offense very pleased.
Last night Jonny Flynn and the Minnesota Timberwolves took on the Los Angeles Clippers at home in the Target Center. The first quarter of the game went really well, the Wolves matched the Clippers point for point and were even up by two points at the buzzer. But things went downhill in a hurry over the final three frames. The Clippers stepped their game up and the Wolves never seemed to match their intensity.
Flynn was held to just 9 points on 3 for 12 shooting, one of his worst nights since his NBA rookie seasons started. With 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 turnovers Flynn really did nothing noteworthy for the night.
Wolves veteran and Flynn’s mentor Kevin Love couldn’t even redeem the team with his double-double. Timberwolves Head Coach Kurt Rambis told a reporter after the game, “This was a big step backwards in my mind. Both effort-wise and defensive-wise, we took a step backwards.”
Jonny Flynn never thought the day would come when he was celebrating his third win of a season over two months into a basketball season. Flynn, the former Western New York standout in his rookie year in the NBA, while talking to a reporter from the Buffalo News, estimated he’s already lost more games with the Minnesota Timberwolves than he lost with Niagara Falls High School and Syracuse University combined.
Yet after a horrible 15-game Timberwolves losing streak, the team has put together wins within days of each other. If last Saturday’s game against the Utah Jazz at the Target Center was any indication of how the month of December will go, a turnabout may not be so far off.
Flynn and the Timberwolves stepped onto the Target Center floor ready to play against the Jazz. In 34 minutes of action Flynn posted 16 points, 4 assists and most importantly turned the ball over only once. In large part to better ball protecting, Flynn helped lead Timberwolves to their 108-101 victory.
Last night’s Minnesota Timberwolves game started strong. Wolves fans, at the Target Center last night for the game against the Memphis Grizzlies, hoped rookie Jonny Flynn and Al Jefferson were going to bring them a second straight at win following 15 losses.. With an 8 point lead at the half, things were looking that way.
But Flynn and his teammates came out in the second half tired and sloppy. Meanwhile the Grizzles did the opposite. For the game over 29 minutes, Flynn posted a meager 12 points with 2 rebounds. He did however finally have a great night for assists, posting a career-high 9, but it wasn’t enough to lead his team to a win.
Flynn missed crucial back to back shots in the final minute of the game that would have made the final 97-95 deficit look quite a bit different.
Minnesota basketball fans had all but given up hope on Jonny Flynn and the Timberwolves after an entire month without a single win. Wolves critics were saying that the roster, already looking tired after barely more than a month of play shouldn’t expect a win until mid-December at best. Those critics are now eating their words.
Flynn and the Timberwolves spent their Thanksgiving weekend in Denver upsetting the Nuggets, 106-100. The victory snapped an eye-popping 15 game losing streak. The Wolves hadn’t won since defeating New Jersey on opening night.
Flynn , the highly touted rookie from Niagara Falls, had a great game. He played just short of 30 minutes, collecting 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists. For the season, he’s now averaging 14.4 points and is up to 3.6 assists per night. After consecutive games of being held to single-digit points, Flynn has scored at least 16 points in each of his last four contests.
Just 14 games into his rookie season, Jonny Flynn has become part of Minnesota Timberwolves history. Unfortunately it’s not history he wants any part of.
Flynn scored a team-high 17 points last night and added 5 assists, but it wasn’t enough. Minnesota lost on the road to the Los Angeles Clippers last night, 91-87. The loss was the Wolves 13th in a row and at 1-13 the team equaled its worst start in franchise history.
After looking lost in the offense in recent games, the former Niagara Falls high school star played well in Los Angeles. He went 6-of-12 from the field and hit both his three point attempts in just under 29 minutes of action. The 17 points scored was the second-best of his brief career, but it wasn’t enough to prevent another loss.
Wednesday night the Minnesota Timberwolves took on the Houston Rockets at home in the Target Center. The game ended almost identically to the all of the games Jonny Flynn and the Wolves have been playing recently. They lost 97-84.
As a whole, the Wolves roster were sloppy and inconsistent. Flynn mirrored this, in 23 minutes of game time he scored just 9 points, one rebound and 3 turnovers. Not only could Flynn not find the hoop himself, he did not help the rest of the Timberwolves get there either, as evidenced by his 2 assists for the whole night. Al Jefferson came back to the roster after taking time off to be with his family following the death of his grandmother. Jefferson scored 20 points, posted 10 rebounds and had 4 assists with only 10 more minutes of playing time than Flynn received, an indication the rookie has a lot of learning to do.
The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to lose and the players, fans and coaches are starting to get really sick of it. Last weekend Jonny Flynn and the Wolves played the Dallas Mavericks at that Target Center in Minneapolis. The team looked timid and unsure of themselves, something reflected in the low point total at the end of the game.
Flynn, who saw 30 minutes of game time, only managed to score 11 points. To symbolize how bad the team has played, he was the high scorer.
Saturday night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies was no better. Flynn played just under a half hour of game time but only managed 10 points. What hurt his game against the Grizzlies was turn-overs, Flynn made six of them, most of which came from bad passes. Several times on Saturday Flynn attempted to take the ball to the lane for a quick shot, got into trouble and threw it away It‘s. the exact thing, Minnesota Head Coach Kurt Rambis is trying to avoid. Rambis is trying to run a triangle offense with the Wolves that will keep the ball moving. Flynn, however, seems to be having trouble adjusting to this new style of basketball.
After not doing it often in high school or college, Jonny Flynn and his Minnesota Timberwolves are starting to get a little too acquainted with losing. Wednesday night’s loss against the Portland Trailblazers was the 8th consecutive loss the Wolves have posted after being on the receiving end of a 107-84 whupping.
Pre-season hopes had been high for the Timberwolves, especially in the Twin Cities where fans thought that with a new GM, coach and roster the team would have a shot at a winning record. Sadly, those hopes are all but gone. Local critics are now saying they don’t have a realistic shot at winning more than a game or two until mid-December at the earliest, and in my opinion it could be well into the new year before they see consecutive wins.
Jonny Flynn is hardly used to losing. As the point guard at Niagara Falls high school he lead his team to the New York State public high school championship in 2005. Last year he helped engineer Syracuse to an improbable Big East title. So you’ll have to forgive him if he’s not used to the bitter taste of defeat on a regular basis.
But that’s exactly what’s happening early on during his NBA rookie season as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Simply put, the Wolves have been getting beat like a drum. Since a final second opening night victory against New Jersey, they’ve dropped their last seven games. Their last three defeats have come by an average of 25.6 points.
Jonny Flynn and the Minnesota Timberwolves returned home last night to Minneapolis and the Target Center after a stint on the road to take on the Boston Celtics and Kevin Garnett, the former star of the Timberwolves.
Fan buzz was high before a game that pit the Wolves new star against the old. Despite a strong effort by Flynn to show that new guard was superior to the old, the Timberwolves and Flynn fell just a little bit short… 2 points short to be exact, 92-0. Boston came into the game undefeated at 6-0.
Jonny Flynn now has a full week of his NBA career in the books. The former Niagara Falls high school and Syracuse University stand out made his NBA debut last Monday after being the sixth overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves over the summer.
The early reviews are mostly good. Minnesota is off to a 1-2 start; defeating New Jersey on opening night before suffering consecutive losses to Cleveland and Phoenix over the weekend.
For his part, Flynn is leading the Wolves in scoring at 15.3 points per game. It ranks him second only to Brandon Jennings (Milwaukee) at 20.5 points in rookie scoring average. He’s also shooting 47% from the field, has made 2 of his 4 three point attempts and has knocked down 14-of-16 free three attempts, all while averaging just under 25 minutes per game.
Last night at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Western New York native Jonny Flynn and his Minnesota Timberwolves opened their regular season. Wolves fans and Twin Cities sports enthusiasts alike came out to see how Flynn would perform when the pressure was really on with the games now counting in the standings.
Flynn past his first test with flying colors. With a fourth quarter point deficit that left Timberwolves fans wondering if Flynn was the right choice, he came through, cementing in any doubters minds that despite losing Ricky Rubio earlier this summer there was a new regime and Flynn intends to be at the forefront of the change.
