Week Three High School Football Wrap-Up

  • Posted on September 19, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Chad-KellyWeek three of the Western New York high school football season is officially in the books, and there’s plenty of interesting storylines to come from it.

The big story of course was St. Joes, who defeated Monsignor Martin Association rival Canisius at home Saturday, 34-20 in front of nearly 3,500 fans.  The hero was sophomore Nigel Davis, who returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and had 60 rushing yards (with another touchdown) to go with an interception.  Clemson-bound quarterback Chad Kelly threw for 198 yards on 8-of-14 passing and ran for another 91 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown as the Maruaders won for the second straight week while handing Canisius their first loss of the season.

In the 79th meeting between the storied rivals, St. Joes never trailed as they look to repeat as Catholic league champions.  Mercer Timmis led Canisius with 267rushing yards on 36 carries and all three Crusaders’ touchdowns.

Paige Scores 42 To Lead Jamestown To Class-AA Final

  • Posted on March 3, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Jaysean PaigeLancaster entered their Section VI semifinal with Jamestown Thursday night brimming with confidence.  They played the Red Raiders close in two games already this season.  They were on the heels of a five-game winning streak and disposed of Kenmore West to get to Buffalo State College for the Class-AA final four.

It was starting to seem Lancaster was poised for a huge upset Thursday in their third try with Jamestown, but Jaysean Paige personally made sure the clock struck midnight on their fairy tale hopes.

The Jamestown junior put on arguably the best performance of anyone in Western New York this season, pouring in 42 points from literally all over the floor to lead Jamestown to a 68-53 and a date with Niagara Falls Saturday night for the Class-AA championship.

For the first time, the event is sponsored by Adpro Sports, with the enjoyment of the student-athletes as the main objective, along with a strong focus on a healthy spirit of cooperation and competition between the private Catholic institutions of the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association and the public schools of Section VI and the ECIC, per the challenge’s press release.

Among last year’s thrillers, then No. 2 Nichols defeated top-ranked at the time Niagara Falls high school.

Section VI Class AA Final: North Tonawanda 54, Lancaster 7

  • Posted on November 7, 2009 at 10:09 pm

In many ways, it  seemed fitting that Lancaster played this game at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills.

The previously unbeaten Redskins run a no-huddle offense, engineered by a quarterback sporting uniform No. 5.  Sound familiar?

Whatever disease the Bills have on this turf must be contagious, because it spread like wildfire to Lancaster.
