Mark Gaughn of the Buffalo News reported Saturday night that Mike Shanahan has taken himself out of consideration for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. According to the report, a league sourced told Gaughn that Shanahan notified the Bills more than a week ago there wouldn’t be a need for a second meeting.
Shanahan, who went 154-103 with a pair of Super Bowls during his career, is 15th on the NFL’s all-time list winning list among head coaches. He’s strongly rumored to be the leading candidate for the imminent Washington Redskins vacancy. The fact the Redskins recently hired Bruce Allen, who is close to Shanahan is adding fuel to the fire.
Besides Shanahan, the Bills were rumored to contact Jon Gruden about their head coaching job. Gruden told them he wasn’t interested in returning to coaching this season.
The Bills conclude their season against Indianapolis next Sunday and it’s likely they’ll begin the process of finding a permanent head coach in place of interim Perry Fewell.
It’s been the topic of conversation for roughly a week in Buffalo Bills country, and now, we have the first details of the event itself. Bills COO Russ Brandon met for seven hours with former Denver head coach Mike Shanahan late Monday into early Tuesday, and according to the source of the ESPN report detailing the event, the meeting went well. The report describes Brandon’s presentation to Shanahan as “persuasive.”
Shanahan was quoted in the report. “We had an excellent meeting,” Shanahan said Wednesday. “I was really impressed with Russ Brandon and everything he had to say. We’re going to stay in touch and see what develops.”

It was a week ago today, following a 41-17 road loss to one of football’s hottest teams in Tennessee, that the Buffalo Bills relieved head coach Dick Jauron of his duties and promoted defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to interim head coach. Since then, the Bills have lost a close road game in Jacksonville, suffered two more devastating, season-ending injuries, and crept a little closer toward the top of the 2010 NFL Draft order.
Most interestingly of all, they’ve also been linked to nearly every big-name head coach on the market.
Mike Shanahan, former head coach of Denver, will meet with the Bills at some point this week, before Thanksgiving on Thursday. The team went after Jon Gruden briefly before he re-upped his contract with ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.” Last night, NFL.com reported that the Bills have reached out to former Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher. Tangentially, names like Mike Holmgren, Tony Dungy and Marty Schottenheimer have been mentioned, too, though it seems apparent that none of those three men are particularly interested in coaching again.

Unless Perry Fewell can miraculously turn around the franchise over the final seven weeks, the Buffalo Bills are going to be looking for a new head coach, at the very least come January 4, 2010. With a fan base already incensed, odds are Ralph Wilson finally takes a swing for the fences with the hire.
Among big name free agents already linked to having the Bills interest, Mike Shanahan is a name the team is attracted to.
Shannon Sharpe, another CBS analyst who is still close to Mike Shanahan, who he played for, says the Bills will meet with his former coach this week, but Shanahan will make it clear to him what he’s looking for.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have contacted former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan after firing Dick Jauron on Tuesday. Pro Football Talk has the story, too, citing Schefter:
Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Bills have contacted Mike Shanahan to gauge Shanahan’s interest in becoming their next head coach.
ESPN also reports that the process is underway of arranging a meeting between Shanahan and the Bills.
Well, that didn’t take long.
