Standing a mere five feet, seven inches on a good day, Carlos Rivera hardly looks the part of an intimidating basketball player.
Rivera may be diminutive in stature but his play was gargantuan Thursday night, scoring 26 points from all over the gym to go with an assortment of steals, assists and body spills as his Jamestown Red Raiders advanced to Saturday’s Section VI Class AA final with a 57-34 throttling over North Tonawanda.
The senior scored 19 of those 26 points in the second and third quarters while the game’s outcome was still in doubt. It only seemed fitting he’d close the scoring with the game’s last three points on a long distance bomb as a Lumberjacks defender sent him crashing to the floor.

Lost among the hoopla of a big Buffalo Bills win on Sunday was the stunningly dominant performance by Western New York in high school football over the weekend. By the time the New York State finals were finished in Syracuse, Section VI had claimed four state class titles for the second consecutive year. By doing so, Western New York stamped its signature as being the undisputed hot spot for high school football in the Empire State.
North Tonawanda (Class AA), Sweet Home (Class A), Southwestern (Class C) and Randolph (Class D) all waltzed through their opponents en route to state crowns. Western New York has now won eight of the last 10 state football crowns.

In many ways, it seemed fitting that Lancaster played this game at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills.
The previously unbeaten Redskins run a no-huddle offense, engineered by a quarterback sporting uniform No. 5. Sound familiar?
Whatever disease the Bills have on this turf must be contagious, because it spread like wildfire to Lancaster.
