Bishop Timon-St. Jude was an angry team coming into Lancaster Tuesday night to face St. Mary’s High School. Dropping three close games late over the past couple of weeks put the Tigers in a sour mood and out to prove a point.
Speaking of sour moods, St. Mary’s coach Dan Gill was certainly in one by the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers blew off the doors in the opening moments as they jumped to a 12 point lead at the end of the first quarter and spent the rest of the way on cruise control for the 54-34 victory.
Timon exploded early, getting up 15-4 on the strength of eight points from Jordan Williams in the game’s first five minutes, including a pair of three pointers as Kyle Kobis hit a third to send Gill into a frenzy during a time out.

Timon traveled down to Batavia Thursday evening and gave the highly touted Blue Devils all they could handle, but fell short as Batavia survived a tough test with a 67-61 victory.
The game was tight all the way with Batavia leading by five after one, four after two and just three points after three. But every time Timon came close to grabbing the lead, a big play by Batavia kept them on top.
As is usually the case with the Section V powerhouse, Andrew Hoy was the difference. The school’s all-time leading scorer dropped a game-high 28 points, including five three-pointers and dished out six assists. Justin Washington added 16 points to go with eight rebounds.

There’s few tasks more daunting in all of Western New York high school sports than walking into Bishop Timon-St. Jude’s gym on McKinley Parkway in South Buffalo and leaving with a victory during a winning Tigers season. Catholic rival St. Joes flirted big-time with being Timon’s latest victim, but a last second bucket followed by a dominant overtime sent the Timon fans home in a sour mood.
Junior center Reggie Agbeko put in a loose ball after teammate Steve Moser’s shot was blocked right before the final buzzer sounded to send the game to overtime. There, St. Joes outscored Timon in extra time 9-3 and forced six Tigers turnovers along the way as the Marauders ended Timon’s undefeated season, 68-62.
As expected the game was a wild affair in front of a boisterous crowd that saw several lead changes and neither team get up by more than seven at any part of the game. St. Joes led at the end of the first quarter, 11-9 and clung to a 27-25 halftime lead.

Anyone who covers sporting contests for a media outlet, whether you do it for a living or merely as hobby, knows there’s only one advantage of witnessing one-sided affairs—- the ability to get a jump start on your story long before the game is over.
When it comes to the Timon Tigers and their boy’s basketball team thus far in 2010-11, I’ve gotten plenty of practice at penning stories in the third quarter and simply filling in the blanks when the final buzzer sounds. Timon has played nine games so far this season and none have been decided by single digits. Their lowest margin of victory this year has been 11 points last month at Nichols; which perhaps was Timon’s worst game of the season.
The lack of late-game drama is expected to change Thursday night in South Buffalo when Timon (9-0) plays host to Monsignor Martin Association rival St. Joes (9-4) at 7:30pm. Both teams are ranked in the top 10 among large schools.

Bishop Timon St. Jude was expected to receive its first real test of the season Tuesday evening when the undefeated Tigers traveled to Williamsville East. The Flames came into the game with a record of 7-1, including an upset win over Clarence in the Amherst Tournament last month.
For the Tigers, considered this test aced.
Junior guard Kyle Kobis was outstanding, nearly single-handedly carrying the Timon offense in the first half as they overcame a sluggish start on both ends of the floor to rout Williamsville East in their own gym, 72-43.
Kobis scored 19 points and had six rebounds, including five on the offensive end… all before the teams went into the locker room for halftime.

Bishop Timon St. Jude remained undefeated in boys high school basketball Tuesday evening, easily defeating Iroquois, 69-41 to win the third annual Mark F. Scarcello Memorial Classic in front of their home South Buffalo crowd.
Timon improved to 7-0 on the season and outscored Iroquois and Buffalo Science Academy over the past two nights by a combined 151-67. While skeptics will point, quite accurately to their lack of quality opponents on the early portion of the schedule, there’s no denying the Tigers are one of the area’s most explosive teams.
Timon roared to a commanding early lead as Junior Jordan Williams matched the point output of the entire Iroquois team in the first quarter (nine).

Bishop Timon St. Jude played host to the third annual Mark F. Scarcello Memorial Basketball Classic Monday evening in South Buffalo. As expected, the Tigers had no problem advancing to Tuesday’s final.
Ranked eighth among large schools in Western New York, Timon dominated from the opening tip against an outgunned Buffalo Academy of Science Charter squad, exploding to a 34-point lead at halftime and coasting to an 82-26 victory.
Juniors Kyle Kobis and Jordan Williams keyed a one-sided first quarter that saw Timon (6-0) take control, 22-10. The two combined for 18 points in the first eight minutes with Kobis springing for 13 on his own.

Despite a slow start to the season that’s seen them drop two of their first three games, MST Seneca High School traveled to South Buffalo Monday night still clinging to the 10th spot in the Buffalo News basketball rankings among small schools. After tonight, they’ll have a lot of impressing to do in order to return to the list anytime soon.
Bishop Timon St. Jude, sixth-ranked among large schools, utterly dominated every facet of the game from the opening tip until the final horn — administrating a 100-55 blow out in front of an animated home crowd.
While the Timon supporters may have been excited, Seneca head coach Scott Kirsh was less than enthusiastic after the game. He refused comment when approached, understandably frustrated by his team’s lackluster performance, and politely as can be expected quipped he had “enough problems to worry about in his own locker room.”

It’s not often this early in the high school basketball season you get a matchup featuring a pair of squads ranked high last season’s final poll, but such was the case Wednesday night when OTC Middle College, the number-one ranked small school in WNY and defending New York State Class-C champions, passed through South Buffalo to tangle with Bishop Timon St. Jude, ranked sixth among large schools last year.
While the buildup was suspenseful, the contest was not. Timon hit everything in site during the first half, seemingly draining jumpers all the way out to McKinley Parkway. The Tigers stormed out to a 22-point halftime lead and never looked back in clobbering OTC, 74-57 in their season opener, witnessed by a overjoyed…. and quite animated home crowd.
From the opening tip, this showdown was never in doubt. Timon scored five points before OTC head coach Randall Rich had a chance to blink, raced out to a commanding 21-4 margin before the first quarter was over and by the time the teams went into their locker rooms, had the game firmly in control, 46-24.

Williamsville South senior quarterback Joe Licata has had a magical career. It culminated Friday night when he became Western New York’s all-time leader in touchdown passes. Licata threw for four scores, including a seven yarder to Kevin O’Connell that allowed him to surpass the career record of 71 by Randall Secky of Maple Grove, as the Billies held off Iroquois 33-31 in Class-A action.
Licata finished the night 15-of-20 for 197 yards. He told Buffalo News reporters that he didn’t know he was on pace to break the record until this past week.
The other big story this weekend was junior quarterback Chad Kelly (nephew of Jim Kelly), who led St. Joes to a stunning victory Saturday afternoon, throttling second-ranked large school Canisius, 50-26 in front of a delighted home crowd.

The matchups for the 2010 Monsignor Martin vs. ECIC high school basketball challenge have been made official. Once again, St. Mary’s of Lancaster high school will host the action as it will showcase members of the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association in basketball competition against members of the ECIC.
For the first time, the event is sponsored by Adpro Sports, with the enjoyment of the student-athletes as the main objective, along with a strong focus on a healthy spirit of cooperation and competition between the private Catholic institutions of the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association and the public schools of Section VI and the ECIC, per the challenge’s press release.
Among last year’s thrillers, then No. 2 Nichols defeated top-ranked at the time Niagara Falls high school.

It’s one of the oldest clichés in sports, “losing was the best thing that could have happened.” But sometimes clichés are actually cliché because they hold a lot of truth, and in the case of Bishop Timon’s lacrosse team, their loss to West Seneca East two weeks ago may just have been that loss.
Since being upset by the Trojans, Timon have only conceded nine goals in four games and on Tuesday night Timon sent a reminder that they are still one of the best teams in Western New York after a 16-1 trouncing of Monsignor Martin rivals Canisius.
The most impressive part of Timon’s win is the fact that Syracuse-bound Chris Kane did not find the net. Instead it was freshman Tommy Gioia, junior Sam Connors and many others contributing on offense, while junior Brian Sullivan, the best long pole defender in Western New York, showed again why the University of North Carolina cannot wait to get him to Chapel Hill.

After a run of Manhattan Cup playoff crowds that could be described as docile, the faithful from Timon made the voyage to the Koessler Athletic Center and were rowdier than ever. Suddenly the neutral site quickly had the feel of a South Buffalo home game. Fans battered Nichols players with insults long before the opening tip.
It didn’t matter.
Nichols stars Will Regan and Ron Canestro get most the ink and deservedly so, but on this night it was Stan Wier who would earn the headlines. Wier scored a game-high 21 points, including several big buckets while the outcome was still in doubt as the Vikings ended up rolling over Timon, 76-50.

We’re down to the final four contenders for the Catholic league’s prestigious Manhattan Cup. No. 3 St. Mary’s takes on No. 2 Canisius at 6pm, followed by No. 4 Bishop Timon against top seeded Nichols. Both games are taking place at Canisius College.
Stop right here beginning at 6pm for instant live updates, scores and statistics for both games.
Canisius College tonight is the venue for a pair of intriguing Manhattan semi final matchups in boys high school basketball. St. Mary’s of Lancaster will try to prevent Canisius from defending their title at 6pm followed by a rubber match between Bishop Timon and Nichols, the top ranked large school in Western New York.
While conventional wisdom suggests it will be the two top seeded teams advancing to Sunday night’s final, this has been a wildly unpredictable high school season where anything can—and plenty of times did happen.
Nichols, Canisius and Timon all went 1-1 against each other on the year and while St. Marys failed to beat Canisius or Nichols they did upend Timon on the final day of the regular season on the road to finish seeded higher.

Whenever Bishop Timon and St. Joes share the floor in a high school basketball game, things are rarely easy. That was certainly the case Sunday afternoon as the two rivals met in the quarterfinals to open the Monsignor Martin Association playoffs. Neither team could settle things in regulation, and Timon used a 10-1 run late in overtime to take command and eventually win, 61-54.
As we’ve seen so many times this season in Catholic school play, the game featured yet another last second finish to get the crowd out of their seats. St. Joes led 49-46 with 6.7 seconds left before senior guard Mike Scarcello went the length of the court and hit a three pointer over a pair of Marauders defenders as the buzzer went off to force overtime.

It begins Sunday afternoon with a quarterfinal Monsignor Martin Association quadruple header. #4 Bishop Timon is taking on #5 St Joes at 1pm, followed by third seeded St. Mary’s/Lancaster vs. #6 St. Francis, #2 Canisius vs. #7 Niagara Catholic and eighth seeded O’Hara having the daunting task of trying to knock off top ranked Nichols.

If you thought the 2009-10 boys’ high school basketball season has been a wild ride, you haven’t seen anything yet.
The final week of the regular season concludes over the next few days and to say there’s still plenty at stake in the Monsignor Martin Association and Yale Cup is an understatement.
Let’s start with the Catholic schools. Number-two Canisius travels to top-ranked Nichols Wednesday night in the game of the year that will decide the top seed for the Manhattan Cup playoffs. If Canisius, who defeated Nichols earlier this year is victorious they’ll earn the top seed. But if Nichols wins, then things really get interesting.

When these teams last met a few weeks ago, Bishop Timon handed then-number one Nichols a four point loss. The Vikings would have none of it in their rematch at home on Monday night.
Nichols (15-6/8-2) used a suffocating defense that harassed the normally sound Tigers into their worst shooting performance of the year. The Vikings took control early and were able to cruise to a surprisingly easy 65-47 victory.
Will Regan showed why he’s the reigning Western New York Player of the Year, having one of his trademark well rounded statistical games. The senior had game-highs of 20 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots.

Western New York high school basketball continues to be as unpredictable as ever. Just two days after a disappointing loss to St. Francis, Bishop Timon returned home and knocked off Nichols, the top ranked large school, 64-60.
Timon didn’t get lucky with a last second win; they took it to a heavily favored Nichols squad from the opening tip. The Tigers led by eight after one, 11 at the half and 14 after the third before Nichols came back to make it a close game.
Sophomore Kyle Kobis led Timon (12-3, 3-1) with 22 points, including five three pointers. Dut Dour added 16 points.

It was statement time Tuesday night for two of Western New York’s best high school basketball teams as fourth-ranked Canisius traveled to fifth-ranked Timon in a key Monsignor Martin Association match up.
By the time it ended, the statement was quite clear; those in attendance got to witness a game for the ages.
In what goes down as in instant classic, Aaron Nevins went coast to coast for a layup to beat the buzzer in giving Canisius a breathtaking win 78-77 overtime victory.
Timon, down 20 at halftime, wrestled the lead with eight seconds left in overtime when Kyle Mackowiak took a perfect pass from Dut Dour for an uncontested layup.

The 2009-10 Western New York high school basketball season may just be in its infancy stages, but Timon St. Jude is wasting little time throwing their name in the hat among the area’s elite teams.
The seventh-ranked large school in WNY used the three pointer as its weapon of choice, hitting seven of them in the second half after just two in the first, and held off Lackawanna, 74-67 to improve to 4-0 in the first game of the Mon signor Martin Association vs ECIC Challenge at St. Mary’s of Lancaster high school.
Tigers’ senior big man Dut Dour continued his early scoring onslaught, dropping a team-high 22 points, including eight straight in the second quarter as the Tigers blew open a tight game early and raced out to a 35-22 a lead. Dour also had 13 rebounds.

Williamsville South ventured into Timon high school Tuesday night brimming with confidence. Ranked third in the latest Buffalo News large school poll, the Billies expected to handle the Tigers, even without star guard Mark Coppola, who injured his knee in Glen Falls last weekend.
They left the gym humbled, on the wrong end of a 64-50 loss in a game not nearly as close as the final score indicated. Timon (2-0) entered the locker room with a three point lead at the half and by the time the horn sounded to end the third, the game was essentially over and the upset officially on.
