  • Posted on November 2, 2011 at 11:14 am

Javon McCreaThe Mid-American Conference named its preseason All-Conference team on Wednesday and University at Buffalo forward Javon McCrea was one of the five players selected from the East Division.

A sophomore forward, McCrea was named the 2011 MAC Freshman of the Year after posting one of the finest first-year campaigns in school history. He averaged 11.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while playing 22 minutes per game. The Newark, NY native shot 63.1 percent from the field, which would have led the nation if he had made four more field goals on the season.

Over the summer he was invited to the USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Championship Team training camp. He was named a finalist for the team before being the final player cut.

The Bulls tip off the 2011-12 season November 11 when they host Saint Peter’s at Alumni Arena.

  • Posted on October 10, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Branden OliverFor his efforts in leading the team to a critical division win over Ohio Saturday afternoon, sophomore running back Branden Oliver was named the Mid-American Conference’s East Division Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

The Miami, FL native ran for a career-high 179 yards on 34 carries and scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 5:45 remaining on fourth and one, to help lift Buffalo to a 38-37 win over Ohio. Oliver scored from 12, 1 and 1 yards out and also added a career-long 58-yard burst to set up another Buffalo score. In addition, the sophomore had a career-high five receptions for 43 yards to bring his all-purpose total to 222 yards for the game. Oliver now has four 100-yard games on the season.

Oliver had over 100 yards before halftime, and his 179 yards on the ground were the most by a UB rusher since James Starks ran for 181 against UTEP in 2008. He is quietly putting together one of the best seasons ever by a Bulls running back in Division I-A, with 679 yards (113.2 per game) and eight touchdowns through the first six games. In MAC games alone, Oliver is averaging 148.5 yards per game. He has also featured more in the passing game, with 16 catches (third most on the team) for 98 yards.

Next up for Oliver and the Bulls is a trip to the City of Brotherly Love for a matchup against the Temple Owls on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.

UB’s Mack Named MAC East Division Player of the Week

  • Posted on September 12, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Khalil-MackFollowing up on his national recognition where he was honored as the National Defensive Performer of the Week by College Football Performance Awards, sophomore linebacker Khalil Mack was named the Mid-American Conference’s East Division defensive player of the week on Monday.

Mack was a force to be reckoned with during Saturday’s 35-7 win over Stony Brook.

The Fort Pierce, FL native recorded a team-best eight tackles (four solos), 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack, two forced fumbles that were recovered by the Bulls, an interception and three quarterback hurries. Bills To Sign UB Product Domonic Cook

  • Posted on July 26, 2011 at 12:52 am

2011-Buffalo-Bills-Authentic-HelmetFor the second time in two years, the Buffalo Bills have moved quick (once allowed) to sign a University at Buffalo undrafted free agent.  Last year the Bills signed wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt, who made the practice squad, hit the active roster and then made an impact on the field late in the season. Perhaps lightning will strike twice with Buffalo getting Bulls safety Dominic Cook to join the defensive secondary mix.

Cook spent the first three seasons of his UB career at cornerback before converting to safety for his senior season.  His play was stellar last year—- earning first-team All-MAC honors, largely on the strength of six interceptions (sixth in the nation) while forcing three fumbles.

Cook is hoping to join his teammate from last year in the NFL as 2011 rookies.  Cornerback Josh Thomas probably has a much easier road as he was a fifth-round draft pick by Dallas this past April.

Another teammate in the UB secondary from last season, Davonte Shannon, is likely to get a NFL training camp invite in the next 24 hours.

**UPDATE** Via Twitter, it looks like the Bill have signed two more undrafted free agents.   Bills wide receiver David Nelson tweets that the team has signed his former University of Florida teammate, running back Emmanuel Woody while WGR’s Joe Buscaglia is reporting that Texas Tech linebacker Brian Duncan has also signed.

Will Regan Transferring To UB

  • Posted on June 7, 2011 at 1:22 pm

WIll ReganI spoke to the father of former Nichols basketball star Will Regan, and he told me his son has committed to play basketball at the University at Buffalo next season after spending his freshmen year at the University of Virginia.

Regan will make things official later today.

Because he is transferring from Virginia, Regan will have to sit out the 2011-12 college basketball season and will still have three years of eligibility remaining.  The two-time Buffalo News Player of the Year in high school, Regan played in 20 games for Virginia last season but scored a total of just 25 points to go with 18 rebounds as his playing time was nearly non-existent.

“It came down to a comfort level for Will,” his father said.  ”He’s known the coaches since he started attending their camps in 6th grade or so. They’ve seen him play countless times and know what he does well, and they plan to take plan to take full advantage of his strengths.”

Daniels Leaving UB Football Program

  • Posted on June 1, 2011 at 6:45 am

UB LOGOUniversity at Buffalo running backs coach Mike Daniels has decided to relocate out of town with his family, thus leaving the UB football program.

Daniels came to Buffalo prior to the 2010 season. He aided in the development of young running backs Branden Oliver and Jeffvon Gill.

“Coach Daniels did a great job coaching our running backs,” head coach Jeff Quinn said. “I’ve coached with him since 2007 when we were at Cincinnati. I am sorry to see him leave and I wish him and his family all the best.”

A search for Daniels’ replacement is currently underway.

Jonah Bronstein of the Niagara Gazette reported first that Regan has announced he’s leaving Virginia, though he will stay there to complete his academic work for the next two weeks.

The University at Buffalo and Niagara University are two schools heavily in the mix for him to transfer too.  His father Larry told Bronstein that he’s going to take a look at about a dozen programs.

Canisius and St. Bonaventure will not be in the mix.

UB Wrestling Inks Highly Touted Recruit Blake Roulo

UB LOGOThe Buffalo Bulls wrestling team continues to build its program upward, both literally and figuratively. Adding to the excitement of a $400,000 renovation to its facilities, the UB staff announced the signing of Blake Roulo of Matoaca High School in Petersburg, VA. He is a 149-pound prospect who recently became just the second wrestler ever to win four NHSCA titles and is also ranked as the top senior in Virginia out of all weight classes.

“I’m excited about having the opportunity to work with such an outstanding athlete,” head coach Jim Beichner said. “We look forward to many years of athletic and academic success here at UB.”

Earlier this month, Roulo defeated Travis Himmelman out of Colorado 3-1 in the finals of the NHSCA (National High School Coaches  Association) senior nationals. In order to become the second four-time champion ever, Roulo had to go through six of the top seniors in the entire country, and he did it with ease. In other national tournaments, Blake finished second at the Freestyle Nationals and has third- and fourth-place finishes at the Greco Roman Nationals. In regular season tournaments, he performed well at the prestigious Beast of the East Championships, recording second, third and fourth overall finishes in his high school career.

College Corner: Sky Isn’t Falling On UB Just Yet

  • Posted on February 14, 2011 at 11:58 am

College Corner LogoIt all seemed to be going perfectly. Perhaps,  a bit too much.

The UB Bulls (15-8, 7-3 MAC) looked invincible, beating teams by an average of 15.3 points per game over an eight game stretch where they went 7-1. The lone loss was a one-point, road slip-up at Western Division front-runner Ball State. UB even smacked conference favorite Kent State by 25.

So Saturday’s trip to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles; a six-win team one spot above the MAC cellar, should be no contest, right?

Not so.

Starks Reveals He Almost Went To Chicago

James-Starks-UBBy now, most if not all Western New Yorkers know the James Starks story.  The rookie running back from Niagara Falls High School and the University at Buffalo college gets drafted by the Green Bay Packers and comes out of nowhere to help lead the Packers to the Super Bowl.

Here’s something you may not know— Starks almost got drafted by the team he helped beat Sunday in the NFC Championship game, the Chicago Bears.

It was revealed Monday on ESPN’s “First Take” that Starks thought he was going to Chicago on draft weekend last April. In fact, the organization even call him to welcome him to the team.  The legend goes that at the last minute, Bears general manager Jerry Angelo changed his mind.

“When they (Chicago) first called me I was just excited, you know to get an opportunity to play in the NFL,” Starks said on the show. “Then they said they weren’t picking me up so I was just praying for an opportunity and Green Bay gave me that opportunity… I’m blessed to be here.”

McCrea Shines But UB Loses in Miami

  • Posted on January 14, 2011 at 12:06 am

Javon McCreaa UBIt was another conference nail biter for the Buffalo men’s basketball team Thursday night as it dropped its Mid American Conference road opener at Miami (OH), 70-67.

After battling back from a 12-point deficit mid way through the first half, it was a back-and-forth game that featured eight ties and nine lead changes. Freshman Javon McCrea was unstoppable down low and scored 26 points, the most by a Buffalo freshman since the team joined the MAC in 1998

The Bulls struggled to find an offensive rhythm early on, and head coach Reggie Witherspoon turned to various lineup combinations to help snap the early funk. He didn’t need to look any further than his young forward in McCrea, who hit five field goals and had four offensive rebounds in the first half alone. Fellow freshman Jarod Oldham also was a strong point in the opening half, filling in for Byron Mulkey with five points in the first half.
