Huge Impact From Buffalo Ties In Wild Card Weekend

  • Posted on January 10, 2011 at 5:00 am

James Starks UBWhile the Bills have once again been long gone from the NFL playoff picture, Buffalo was very well represented this weekend in Wild Card postseason action.

The biggest story, of course, is former Niagara Falls High School and University at Buffalo running back James Starks.  The sixth-round rookie was the difference for the Green Bay Packers in their 21-16 victory over Philadelphia, rushing for a game-high 123 yards on 23 carries.  The rushing total was also a Green Bay rookie postseason record.

“He (Starks) had a great night tonight,” Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. ” The offensive line did a great job.”

Despite missing his senior season at UB with a shoulder injury, Starks still set a school career rushing record with 3,140 yards to go with 40 total touchdowns.  Before that he was a former All-Western New York quarterback at Niagara Falls, where he threw for over 1,000 yards and ran for 600 more in 2005.

UB’s Mack and Neutz Garner Postseason Honors

  • Posted on December 16, 2010 at 9:07 am

Following terrific freshman campaigns, wide receiver Alex Neutz and linebacker Khalil Mack earned spots on Phil Steele’s 2010 Postseason All-Freshman Teams. Mack was named to the third team for defense and Neutz got the nod on the fifth team for offense. Mack also was a Honorable Mention member on College Football News’ list.

Khalil MackAfter sitting as a redshirt in his first season at Buffalo, Mack erupted on to the scene and wreaked havoc in opposing backfields all season long. The Fort Pierce, FL native recorded team highs in both sacks (with 4.5) and tackles for losses (14.5). Even when he couldn’t take down the ball carrier, he left his mark, hitting the quarterback eight times. He also excelled in coverage, with a team-high ten pass break ups. His 68 total tackles was third-most on the team.

On the other side of the ball, redshirt-freshman Neutz came in and helped his home-town team right away. The Grand Island, NY native had a penchant for making the big play, averaging almost 16 yards per catch while constantly wowing the competition with acrobatic catches. His 26 catches for 414 yards is the best for a first-year player since recent graduate Naaman Roosevelt’s freshman season in 2006. Neutz also had four touchdown receptions and was named the team’s Offensive MVP at the recent awards banquet.

UB Holds On to Beat Bowling Green, 28-26

  • Posted on October 2, 2010 at 10:16 pm

UB FootballIt must be something about Doyt Perry Stadium, because every time the Buffalo football team plays at Bowling Green the incredible seems to happen.

After a four-overtime loss in 2006 and an incredible double overtime win by the Bulls here in 2008 – which clinched the Mid-American Conference East title – Buffalo somehow survived with a 28-26 victory on Saturday after Bowling Green missed a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the game to allow the Bulls to survive.

It was justice for the Buffalo defense who played a tremendous game as UB outgained the Falcons by a whopping  441-176 yards and had 27 first downs compared to BG’s 10. Nonetheless, UB nearly gave up a 28-13 lead in the fourth quarter as the Falcons scored on an 82-yard interception return and a 48-yard pass to cut the lead to two points.

Witherspoon Brings Gold Medal Back To WNY

  • Posted on July 2, 2010 at 7:30 am

Reggie WitherspoonUniversity at Buffalo head men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon, serving as an assistant coach for Team USA, is bringing a gold medal home to Western New York.

Quincy Miller hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to help the USA beat Brazil 81-78 and take the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship at Bill Greehey Arena. This is the fifth gold medal for the United States, who also won in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2006. For Brazil, this is their first silver medal after three bronze medals (1990, 1998 and 2006).

“I am really happy for the kids,” said Witherspoon. “I know that for the most part, it’s as hard as they’ve ever worked at in basketball. It’s something that they love. You’d like to have won it in grand fashion, like we won the other games, but the fact that they had to overcome some adversity probably makes it sweeter. Everything didn’t go well, but they overcame the adversity of the training camp. It’s really good to see them win the gold medal. I think they have a greater appreciation of how it works now.”

The MAC and the RPI

  • Posted on February 22, 2010 at 3:00 pm

The regular season is coming to a close and there are a lot of teams across the country still fighting for an at large bid to the NCAA tournament. Some of these teams are mid-majors, some are from power conferences, and some from conferences in between the two (A-10, the Valley, and Mountain West).

Sadly, there are no teams for the MAC that will make the NCAA tournament without winning it all in Cleveland, but you can’t completely criticize this conference.

Fans who want the best thing possible for UB and the MAC often criticize because it only sends one team to the dance and really haven’t had a legit shot at sending two in at least five years. We want to always have 20 win years and to be annually in the hunt to make a splash when it actually counts. Then we holler and scream when our mediocrity does match up to schools who are able to come through some years, such as Cleveland State, Southern Illinois, George Mason, etc.
