University at Buffalo freshman forward Javon McCrea has been named one of the best freshmen in the nation by Basketball Prospectus. McCrea ranks 15th on a list of the top 25 freshmen so far this season.
The 6-6 forward is averaging 9.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. He also has 19 steals and 26 blocked shots. He is shooting 70.8 percent from the field to lead the MAC and rank second in the nation. He also ranks fourth in the conference in blocked shots and fifth in rebounding.
McCrea has three double-doubles on the season. The Newark, NY native tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds in his debut against Navy to become the first UB player to record a double-double in the first game of his career since Rasaun Young had 15 points and 11 rebounds against Daemen on Nov. 26, 1993.
McCrea is the only freshman from the Mid-American Conference to appear on the list.
While the Bills have once again been long gone from the NFL playoff picture, Buffalo was very well represented this weekend in Wild Card postseason action.
The biggest story, of course, is former Niagara Falls High School and University at Buffalo running back James Starks. The sixth-round rookie was the difference for the Green Bay Packers in their 21-16 victory over Philadelphia, rushing for a game-high 123 yards on 23 carries. The rushing total was also a Green Bay rookie postseason record.
“He (Starks) had a great night tonight,” Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. ” The offensive line did a great job.”
Despite missing his senior season at UB with a shoulder injury, Starks still set a school career rushing record with 3,140 yards to go with 40 total touchdowns. Before that he was a former All-Western New York quarterback at Niagara Falls, where he threw for over 1,000 yards and ran for 600 more in 2005.

University at Buffalo men’s basketball head coach Reggie Witherspoon has announced the signing of Xavier Ford to a National Letter of Intent. The 6-8, 200-lb. forward will join the Bulls beginning in the 2011-12 season.
Ford hails from Colorado Springs, CO where he played for head coach Jim Masterson at Harrison High School. He averaged 22 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots per game last season as a junior en route to earning honorable mention All-State honors. He is also a two-time All-League selection.
Ford also played for the AAU program Colorado Chaos and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Desert Invitational in Phoenix.

University at Buffalo head men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon, serving as an assistant coach for Team USA, is bringing a gold medal home to Western New York.
Quincy Miller hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to help the USA beat Brazil 81-78 and take the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship at Bill Greehey Arena. This is the fifth gold medal for the United States, who also won in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2006. For Brazil, this is their first silver medal after three bronze medals (1990, 1998 and 2006).
“I am really happy for the kids,” said Witherspoon. “I know that for the most part, it’s as hard as they’ve ever worked at in basketball. It’s something that they love. You’d like to have won it in grand fashion, like we won the other games, but the fact that they had to overcome some adversity probably makes it sweeter. Everything didn’t go well, but they overcame the adversity of the training camp. It’s really good to see them win the gold medal. I think they have a greater appreciation of how it works now.”

The Bulls’ journey in the 2010 MAC Tournament will be decided in the outcome of Friday’s Kent State-Akron contest at Akron. If Akron wins, the Bulls will receive a first-round bye as the fourth seed. If Kent State wins, the Bulls will enter as the fifth seed and will host Toledo on Sunday, March 7 at 2:00 pm.
The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a fast start by Akron and fell to the division-leading Zips, 77-67, at Rhodes Arena on Wednesday night. Akron jumped out to a 24-4 lead and never looked back, snapping the Bulls’ five game winning streak.

The regular season is coming to a close and there are a lot of teams across the country still fighting for an at large bid to the NCAA tournament. Some of these teams are mid-majors, some are from power conferences, and some from conferences in between the two (A-10, the Valley, and Mountain West).
Sadly, there are no teams for the MAC that will make the NCAA tournament without winning it all in Cleveland, but you can’t completely criticize this conference.
Fans who want the best thing possible for UB and the MAC often criticize because it only sends one team to the dance and really haven’t had a legit shot at sending two in at least five years. We want to always have 20 win years and to be annually in the hunt to make a splash when it actually counts. Then we holler and scream when our mediocrity does match up to schools who are able to come through some years, such as Cleveland State, Southern Illinois, George Mason, etc.
