Twitterverse Recap Of Opening Bills Practice

Posted on July 28, 2013 by Patrick Moran

Bills-Helmet6Not in the mood to wait for full written recaps of the opening of the 2013 Buffalo Bills training camp?  Well look no further.

While fans not fortunate enough to be in attendance at St. John’s Fisher College Sunday evening for the Bills first practice of the year wait to read full reports from tonight via their favorite media outlets, including hopefully this one, I pulled random news, notes and observations from practice directly off various media Twitter feeds.

The Bills take the field for practice again tomorrow afternoon at 2:10pm and are scheduled to go for three hours. Practice is open to the public and no ticket is required.

For now, here’s the Twitter “cliff notes” version of tonight’s practice… and look for a detailed recap right here later tonight or early Monday morning.

Here is video of the first brilliant pass of E.J. Manuel’s NFL career as he connects on a long touchdown with T.J. Graham. For the record, he followed up with another impressive long connection to Graham minutes later.

Associated Press writer John Wawrow tweets that it’s a little early to fall in love with Manuel. To be fair, what he says is 100% accurate.

An unsurprising development at camp and one you can expect to see throughout much, if not all of the next several weeks.

Scott Chandler looks like he’s recovering very nicely from his ACL knee injury.

Sully thinks Chandler is one of the biggest stories of the opening practice.

A great sign for the secondary as cornerback Stephon Gilmore wasted no time going into shutdown mode in camp.

What doesn’t bode so well for the defensive backs is an observation made by Tim Graham–one I completely agree with

Going by the opening night of practice, it appears punt return duties will be a battle between Leodis McKelvin, T.J. Graham, Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin. While McKelvin is far and away the most accomplished, his role at cornerback could be bigger than ever in 2013 and force Marrone to decide not risking him to injury on special teams.

It’s only one day, but perhaps already sign that Colin Brown will get first crack at winning the starting left guard job.

First interception during full 11-on-11 play during camp goes to newly converted safety Aaron Williams. For what it’s worth, the pick came off the arm of Kevin Kolb.

Mike Sullivan of “The Kick is Good” blog mentions the kicking competition, and by “he” Sullivan is referring to rookie Dustin Hopkins. For what it’s worth I’m in complete agreement and think the “competition” between he and veteran Rian Lindell may be over sooner than you think.

Last and certainly not least, if you’re looking for negative Bills news stemming from the opening camp, look no further than this. (And we’ll have more on this later as information becomes available. Doug Marrone is likely to address the subject following practice)

**UPDATE** Following practice Marrone told the media that Williams reported with a sore foot, and that’s why he didn’t participate in drills this evening. We’ll obviously have more on this later.
